We pray for it often, but do we truly know what we are praying for? Many think revival will be had by a gathering of saints and everyone being happy, and that happiness spreading to the lost. Perhaps they think that winning a political victory for Christian morals will bring revival. But what does the Bible show us about revival?

The actual word “revival” is not found in the Bible. The definition of revival is an instance of returning to life or consciousness; a restoration of vigor or vitality. From a Christian perspective it could mean to ignite a passion for the gospel, or that many who are dead in sin are saved and therefore are “revived” in Christ. Most would categorize it to say that revival would be for those who are already saved, but have a new vigor or passion for the gospel. Some have watered it down farther to a re-dedication of your life to God. Are there instances of revival in the Bible and throughout history? I would submit the answer is yes, but what usually ignites revival may be a surprise to most…

The first instance of revival can be found in Genesis 4, the story of Cain and Abel. We probably all know the story by now, Cain was jealous of his brother and slew him. As a result Seth was conceived. We read in (Genesis 4:25-26) "And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. {26} And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD."

So we see that after Abel was persecuted, God blessed Adam with another son, and his son had a son, and then men began to call upon the name of the LORD. Revival; Let’s see if this trend continues?

One need only look at the book of Judges for a historical lesson on revival. Throughout Judges the same pattern is seen: the people were faithful to the Lord, they gradually fell into idolatry; then God punished them through enemies until they repented and called again on the Lord (revival) for rescue; God raised up judges to resist and overcome enemies. I wonder then if revival in the church works the same way?

Let’s start with the death of Jesus, because it is through his persecution, death, and resurrection that our souls can be revived at all. Consider the cross and how horrific it was. The human body contains about 3.5 liters of blood, but by the end of his time on the cross a Roman soldier thrust a spear into his side, and only water poured out. He was literally out of blood, but still alive because he was God. I think it is important to remember that despite all his physical afflictions, it paled in comparison to the spiritual afflictions he was going through when the Father turned his back. Hell is simply separation from God, and Jesus suffered this punishment for you and me, Praise God death had no dominion over him however, for he had never sinned.

Through the persecution and resurrection of Christ, we see the first Christian revival. The Apostles sold out for God, all ended up suffering martyrs death but one.
Matthew
Suffered martyrdom in Ethiopia, was killed by a sword wound.

Mark
Died in Alexandria, Egypt, after being dragged by horses through the streets until he was dead.

Luke
As a result of his tremendous preaching to the lost , was hanged in Greece.

John
Faced martyrdom when he was boiled in huge Basin of boiling oil during a wave of persecution In Rome . However, he was miraculously delivered from death. John was then sentenced to the mines on the prison Island of Patmos... He wrote his prophetic Book of Revelation on Patmos . The apostle John was later freed and returned to serve As Bishop of Edessa in modern Turkey . He died as an old man, the only apostle to die peacefully, but certainly suffered persecution.

Peter
He was crucified upside down on an x-shaped cross. According to church tradition it was because he told his tormentors that he felt unworthy to die in the same way that Jesus Christ had died.

James
The leader of the church in Jerusalem , was thrown over a hundred feet down from the southeast pinnacle of the Temple when he refused to deny his faith in Christ. When they discovered that he survived the fall, his enemies beat James to death with a fuller's club. This was the same pinnacle where Satan had taken Jesus during the Temptation.

James the Great
Son of Zebedee, was a fisherman by trade when Jesus Called him to a lifetime of ministry. As a strong leader of the church, James was ultimately beheaded at Jerusalem. The Roman officer who guarded James watched amazed as James defended his faith at his trial. Later, the officer walked beside James to the place of execution. Overcome by conviction, he declared his new faith to the judge and Knelt beside James to accept beheading as a Christian.

Bartholomew
Also known as Nathaniel was a missionary to Asia. He witnessed for our Lord in present day Turkey. Bartholomew was martyred for his preaching in Armenia where he was flayed to death by a whip.

Andrew
Was crucified on an x-shaped cross in Patras, Greece. After being whipped severely by seven soldiers they tied his body to the cross with cords to prolong his agony. His followers reported that, when he was led toward the cross, Andrew saluted it in these words: “I have long desired and expected this happy hour. The cross has been consecrated by the body of Christ hanging on it.” He continued to preach to his tormentors for two days until he expired.

Thomas
Was stabbed with a spear in India during one of his missionary trips to establish the church in the sub-continent.

Jude
Was killed with arrows when he refused to deny his faith in Christ.

Matthias
The apostle chosen to replace the traitor Judas Iscariot, was stoned and then beheaded.

Paul
Was tortured and then beheaded by the evil Emperor Nero at Rome in A.D. 67. Paul endured a lengthy imprisonment, which allowed him to write his many epistles to the churches he had formed throughout the Roman Empire. These letters, which taught many of the foundational Doctrines of Christianity, form a large portion of the New Testament. Perhaps this is a reminder to us that our sufferings here are indeed minor compared to the intense persecution and cold cruelty faced by the apostles and disciples during their times for the sake of the Faith. (Matthew 10:22) " And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved."

Does this Spirit of revival continue throughout history? One could read a book like “Foxe’s Book of Martyrs” to see the answer is yes. So many Christians have been put to death for their beliefs. Even in present day Christianity, outside of the US, we see the church is heavily persecuted, check out (links removed in compliance of forum rules)

I’d like to share just one occurrence I read about in China. Soldiers broke into the church and threw a Bible on the ground, they stated “anyone can live who spits on this book of lies.” One by one people spit on the Bible and left, until a 17 year old girl kneeled down, and wiped the spit off the Bible and was shot in the head.

So this poses a question for Americans. We see our history was riddled with faithful Christians, but we as a nation have been worshiping idols for a few generations now, if we look at our history lesson we see that next comes persecution, then revival. Are you ready for revival Christians? If we say, “yes I’m ready to die for Christ!” Are we proving it by living for him now?

the problem in america is that revival means to go out and preach your church and get the people into the church. Rather than it meaning awakening in christ and preaching him.

Absolutely, "revival meetings" have been watered down to an emotional experience with pledge cards and church stamps literature at the end. But despite our failures I believe God has heard our prayer for revival, and thus, real persecution is on the horizon. Through the persecution of the saints we will learn who the real body of Christ is, and we will experience revival, possibly at the cost of their lives.

I hope most of us who belong to a church, where Christ is preached. Let's say our church is really a great church We start praying for revival in our area, and even our country. Just for thinking our postor is sure God is calling our chuch to have faith for revival inAmerica.

Revival in America? In all honesty do you really believe a great awakening is gong to happen? Would it take a huge catastrophy, like 911 was, but even larger to bring the people to surrender to God? When we pray do we pray really expecting to really see a revival?

I get depressed with how our present government seems to be doing much against Jesus and His teachings. One example is homosexuality, our gonernment is pushing this as acceptable, even in 1st grade children. (California) To me it seems like our country is sinking into the pit of hell. For me it seems like lip service to pray for a great awakening in America. I guess my feelings maybe the same for other christians too. Is our lack of faith that revival in America, and or community may not see revival?

Do you really believe America will repent and we will see a great awakening? Blessings.

Revival is laive and well in America if you look in the right places. God is on the move wear ever hearts are yielded and hungry for Him.

Perhaps you. Only read the title, revival will come after persecution. We are just barely starting to see persecution with anti bullying campaigns making it illegal to tell a homosexual couple you will not marry them. I'm almost certain within the next 10 year's we will see Christians fine or jailed for standing on biblical principles. It is those who stand who will spark revival. All I'm saying is, get ready, its going to be interesting.

Many churches have incorporated under a 501c3 essentially signing away their rights. Now instead of religious freedom, they are subject to what the government tells them they can do, or they lose their tax exempt status. Will you serve God or mamon when told to marry two men?

The CLA has done our churches a great disservice telling them to incorporate, the constitution already gave religious institutions tax exemptions, but alas like every other American we wanted to buy churches and property on credit and "trust god" to provide, this backwards Orwellian double think will be our demise.

Rest assured, God is faithful to preserve his church, but kiss your stains glass cathedrals and 20000 watt sound systems good bye.

Ah the laeodecian church, you wont fool me.

sintheic: you are directly on target, I personally know that tax exempt status never comes without a cost. The largest church group to have tax exempt status is Morman church. If chrches were willing to end tax exempt status there would not be the control by the city, state or the government. I personally know of not church to have made that move yet. Blessings.

Much longer than a few generations, try the beginning.

When it comes to anything in life I look at the foundation. If the foundation was never built on Holiness and obedience , the fruits will always be unholiness. We look at the present government, the past government and blame them for what we see today. When in reality, if you pick up any history book, do your research, you'll discover the true foundation. The fruits we see today, those seeds were planted in the 1700's and you can go further back.

Nothing new under this sun, things are finally out of the closet. We are more knowledgeable about what's going on in the country because of Internet, media, etc.

Sadly that is true. A classic example is a church decides to have a "revival weekend" or a "revival week", they do the advertising, sign boards, posters, they get everyone ramped up for this coming "revival", they have the event, everyone brings their family members, their friends, work colleagues, the event swells the normal attendance with the networks and social contacts of the church members.

Persecution, wars, disease, famine, natural disasters, these are all things that God uses to prepare the fields ready to plant the seed of the gospel, or revival.

We may think we should be, or want to be a in a constant state of revival, and if we aren't we often blame ourselves, our government, our society, whatever. Actually this is not how God works. In every revival in past history there was a rise, a climax, then a fall. Previous leaders and memory of past revivals falls into relative obscurity.

Actually the revelation of the Bible is that God really moves in revival in a mighty way only in one or few places at the same time on the Earth. In the Bible and history we see this movement started in Jerusalem, and then spread West towards Spain, and then East towards Asia. It has been spreading every since in history from Europe to the USA, and then to China , South East Asia etc. The relatively few places where the gospel has not penetrated in a revival way, North Korea, Iran, etc, we will see what God will do in coming months and years.

If there was once revival in our area , we may never see it again in our generation. That is because God never stays in one place for very long, He does what He wants to do in an area, and moves on. We see this in the life of Christ, He was always moving from place to place.. minister the crowds.. withdraw and hide.. minister again.. withdraw and hide. He followed His Father's will and what He saw His Father doing.. hence the way Jesus lived is the way the Father commanded.

But this does not mean His people should not pray. We must pray and seek for revival, God needs some cooperating people on the Earth first because He can move, but we cannot determine or know in which area He will move next.

For most of us , revival is that 10 minute, 30 minute, or 2 hr period when we wake in the morning, when we leave the cares of the world behind and contact the Lord to enter the Most Holy place. This is when genuine spiritual revival happens.

James1523: Not to forget the prize for who brings the most people! A Black genuine leather Scofield KJV Bible for first place, and second place is a free car wash at the local wash it yourself, Third place is a single chocolate dipped cone at Dariry Queen. I really know this is how it work's, when I was in eighth grade, and I won first place! I remember being so convicted every night, I was sure the preacher must have talked to my parents. Besides who can resist the chior singing "Just As I am" as long as people came down to repent. I still don't know why the light's had to be dimmed durring call durring alter call's of the revival. I do know that I was sincerely wanting to live for Jesus, that never has changed. It seems odd to me now, are revivals still doing these things?

I can't remember that last time we had a genuine 7 day revival. The most I have read in the paper is Sunday to Wed. night revival's. By the way I really do like Just as I am. Blessings.

James1523: This was a Baptist church, and remember, when two or three Baptist's are gathered together it's time to pass the offering plate.

Has anyone ever seen the letters that a health and welfare preacher sent with what looks like a hand written letter on yellow legal sized paper? I knew the firm that was chosen to print and mail these out. This was the leading letter that brought in more money than ever before this was in 1985. The letter had marks to make it look like the writter made a mistake and corrected it. What lenghts will the false teachers / preachers go to for money? Very sad forsure. Blessings

They will have their reward. "The Lord will not be mocked, Whatsoever a man sows that will he also reap." I think the biggest most important thing is that there is revival in our own hearts. Are we truly repentant? Do we have lives that are a good representation of who Christ is and what He can do in our lives? And finally we need to seek God to turn the nation back to Himself. We need to pray like Daniel did. To weep for our nations sins, like Jesus did.

May Yeshua be praised among the nations and His glory be over all the earth!!

Yes, and everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. 2Tim. 3:12 NLT

Here is the really good thing:

If YOU truly desire revival in your heart and seek God for it...you can recieve it regardless of what any church is doing
