Do You Teach Jesus Changed the Law of Moses?

Read carefully. What is Jesus saying, and what do you teach He is saying by your interpretation?

Matthew 5:38-39
38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

He showed the orginally intent of the law. Yes the law said this but one could choose to show love and mercy instead. He did do away with the oral traditions that the Pharisees lived by that is why they grew to hate Him.

The "TEN COMMANDMENTS" are just those given to Moses on the mountain in Exod 20:1-17
However, there were hundreds of other commandments given to Israel. Here are a few...
Exod 21:35 And if one man's ox hurt another's, that he die; then they shall sell the live ox, and divide the money of it; and the dead ox also they shall divide.
Lev 18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.
Lev 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.
Deut 17:1 Thou shalt not sacrifice unto the LORD thy God any bullock, or sheep, wherein is blemish, or any evilfavouredness: for that is an abomination unto the LORD thy God.
Exod 21:28 If an ox gore a man or a woman, that they die: then the ox shall be surely stoned, and his flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be quit.
Exod 21:15 "He who strikes his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.

Some of the sins against the law could be covered by animal sacrifices done by a priest.
The pharisee's believed in following the law to the letter (even the one's who weren't God's laws)
John 8:4 they *said to Him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act.
John 8:5 "Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?"
On top of these there were the "traditions" of the pharisee's and scribes. ( Mark 7:3-9; ) That weren't from God.

In the sermon of the mount, (Matt chaps 5-7) Jesus talks about the law quite a bit, and mentions a lot of it has changed.
But most of it didn't get easier, it got harder.
Mat 5:17 "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
Mat 5:18 "For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
Mat 5:19 "Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

another example. To the commandment of murder, Jesus added merely saying derogatory things against some one.
Mat 5:21 "You have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.'
Mat 5:22 "But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.

Jesus added lust to the commandment of adultery.
Mat 5:27 "You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY';
Mat 5:28 but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Divorce was not one of the "TEN" commandments, but it was something God was against. (Mal 2:16; )
Jesus added to the law of divorce, now he says you can only get divorced for this one reason.
Mat 5:31 "It was said, 'WHOEVER SENDS HIS WIFE AWAY, LET HIM GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE';
Mat 5:32 but I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Jesus went on to say, not only should you not swear an oath on God, but you shouldn't swear an oath at all upon anything.
Mat 5:33 "Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FALSE VOWS, BUT SHALL FULFILL YOUR VOWS TO THE LORD.'
Mat 5:34 "But I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,
Mat 5:35 or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet, or by Jerusalem, for it is THE CITY OF THE GREAT KING.
Mat 5:36 "Nor shall you make an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.
Mat 5:37 "But let your statement be, 'Yes, yes' or 'No, no'; anything beyond these is of evil.

He says love not only your neighbors, but adds to pray for your enemies.
Mat 5:43 "You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR and hate your enemy.'
Mat 5:44 "But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
Mat 5:45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
Mat 5:46 "For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
Mat 5:47 "If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?

Is knowing Jesus all he wants from us? Or would he also like us to "practice righteousness"?
Mat 7:21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.
Mat 7:22 "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?'
Mat 7:23 "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.'
Mat 7:24 "Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock.
Mat 7:26 "Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.

Jesus repeats many of the commandments in other places in the New Testament.For example...
Mat 15:4 "For God said, 'HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER,' and, 'HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH.'
Mark 10:19 "You know the commandments, 'DO NOT MURDER, DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, Do not defraud, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER.'"

Having said all this, I believe we are saved by grace and not by works or good deeds, not even by following the commandments. But I believe Jesus wants us to try.
John 14:15 "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
John 14:21 "He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him."
John 15:10 "If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love.
1 Jn 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments.

In Matt 22:36-40 we see all of this boiled down to two commandments, but really... can you break any of the 10 commandments, and not break one of these two? ( Mark 12:30-31; )

This is the Law of Retribution. Jesus brings up the law of eye for eye, tooth for tooth (vs. 38).
Jesus doesn't change the Law, He establishes it (vs. 39).

But the area that finds most change by readers and students of the Bible in the original law is exactly in the interpretation of verse 39. It would appear that Jesus is saying that if someone struck you once, that you are to allow him to strike you a second time, that you are to actively not resist that man in his offense against you. That would appear to be the case, but the man under the law who is struck once is commanded to strike back. This is the law of retribution. Is Jesus saying to you that if struck once to allow a second strike? If so, then you are saying Jesus is changing the Law of Moses, specifically, the Law of Retribution. The Law does not say, "a cheek, cheek, for a cheek." This is not what the Law of Retribution is saying. The Law is a "cheek for a cheek," if you will. Not a "cheek, cheek, for a cheek."
The key to understanding what Jesus is saying is in the words that preceded the "smite" in the first place, that is, "that ye resist not evil."

I am sure B-A-C knows some things about the Mosaic economy of Laws the children of Israel were commanded to follow and obey. In the Law were provisions that addressed injury through error and accident, and injury through purposeful deliberation. One is injury as the result of good intention, the other is the result of evil intention. Here, Jesus is speaking about evil intention.

I tend to be more old school in my interpretation. I disagree with newer interpretations of it.
But it takes a lot of scripture to explain it.

The short version looks like this. Every single thing we do isn't sin. Nothing we do counts as our own righteousness (lest any should boast).
God the father still demands retribution for the sins we commit. However we ourselves are unable to "fulfill the law" on our own.
The Bible says if we're going to trust in the law to save us, we better not break any part of it. If you break even only one point of the law, you break the whole law.
I don't believe any of us are able to keep from breaking at least some part of the law. This is where Jesus and the law of grace come in.
Jesus fulfills the law. He pays the retribution that God demands for sin.
The Bible says no man will be justified by the law, why? Because ALL have sinned. No man can keep the law. (well, there was one man who never sinned).

I like the way some Bibles put Gal 3:11
(MSG) The obvious impossibility of carrying out such a moral program should make it plain that no one can sustain a relationship with God that way. The person who lives in right relationship with God does it by embracing what God arranges for him. Doing things for God is the opposite of entering into what God does for you. Habakkuk had it right: "The person who believes God, is set right by God--and that's the real life."

(NLT) So it is clear that no one can be made right with God by trying to keep the law. For the Scriptures say, "It is through faith that a righteous person has life."

(AMP) Now it is evident that no person is justified (declared righteous and brought into right standing with God) through the Law, for the Scripture says, The man in right standing with God [the just, the righteous] shall live by and out of faith and he who through and by faith is declared righteous and in right standing with God shall live. [Hab. 2:4.]

Exactly, I don't think this changed either. If there is vengeance to be taken, it belongs to the Lord. Deut 32:35; Rom 12:19; Heb 10:30

The law says, when someone sins, death is required. So everything is fulfilled in one of two ways.
1. Die without knowing Jesus (un-believer, un-saved, name is not in Book of Life, etc..) and you will get the second death (the Lake of fire). This fulfills the law.
2. Die knowing and trusting in Jesus (believer, saved, name in Book of Life, etc..) and Jesus' death pays for your sins, (leading to the second life). This fulfills the law.

Rom 8:1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Rom 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.
Rom 8:3 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh,
Rom 8:4 so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Verse 1 doesn't say we can't sin under the law, it says we are not under the penalty of the law.
Verse 3 says Jesus was the sacrifice offering for our sins.
Verse 4 says this fulfills the law (but only in those of us who walk in the Spirit)

3. The laws of our government (Heb 13:17; Rom 13:1-2; 1 Pet 2:13-17; ) as long as they don't break God's laws. Which are in the hundreds or perhaps thousands.

As for the OT, in addition to all the laws listed above, I think you could also go through Psalms and Proverbs and find many verses such as...
Prov 6:16 There are six things which the LORD hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him:
Prov 6:17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood,
Prov 6:18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that run rapidly to evil,
Prov 6:19 A false witness who utters lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers.

Prov 11:1 A false balance is an abomination to the LORD, But a just weight is His delight.

Jesus never changed the Law of Moses, but He does not want us to keep it. The Law of Moses does not apply to any Christians today, Jew or Gentile. It was for the ancient Israelites and no body else. You cannot extract the 10 commandments from the Law of Moses, and say you are keeping those but rejecting the rest. The 10 commandments are a summary of the entire law. You cannot break it apart and pull out pieces as many people do today. If you want to keep it you must not only not commit adultery but you must also grow a beard and not cut it, and pay your taxes to the Israeli government. It was decided at Jerusalem in Acts 15 that Gentiles were not required to keep the Law of Moses. It was already decided 2000 years ago by the leading apostles themselves. When Jesus walked the Earth the Law of Moses still applied to Jews, His teachings at that time in the Gospels must be applied in context to the Jews of the day to whom He spoke. Later on God allowed the Jewish temple to be destroyed, so that no one can keep the Law of Moses anymore, not even Jews. There is no more Levitical priesthood or sacrifices... The Law of Moses has not been done away with nor is it bad nor is it irrelevant. It is in our bibles for a reason. It is there for historical reasons , and for reference and guidance only, it is not to be followed, nor can it be followed entirely. For salvation, God requires both Jew or Gentile to come to Christ (Gal 3:24). Christ is end of the law (Rom 10:4), the law ends, Christ begins, there is no middle ground of some law and some Christ, or all Christ and some law. Also, the moral law which applied to Gentiles before and after Moses does not apply to Christians. Christ is the end of all moral (goodness or badness) as well. You can try to keep the moral law if you want but it won't save you. There are many atheist and others who keep the moral law and they are very good people, some even more moral than Christians, but are not saved. But the only law in effect today for Christians is the Law of the Spirit of life (Romans 8:2), it is not a law of letters (Law of Moses) and it is not a moral law of right versus wrong. It is like this - the law of Macdonalds. If you only eat Big Macs every day for a year you will be unhealthy. This is the law of Macdonalds. The Law of the Spirit is like this - if you eat from tree of life who is Christ, you will have life. This life overcomes all problems of flesh, self and sin. If you eat of the Mosaic or moral law you will eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil , which is death, and you will have no way to overcome self, sin and death, because you have no life....

He showed the orginally intent of the law. Yes the law said this but one could choose to show love and mercy instead. He did do away with the oral traditions that the Pharisees lived by that is why they grew to hate Him.

I believe the "oral traditions" you speak of were the Law of Moses. Maybe you are confusing the "traditions of men" which still, I do not think Jesus "did away," but He did not uphold them or teach them to His disciples, nor espouse them to the people at large in His discourses.

It was the Second Person of the Trinity (the Word) who gave those Laws to Moses. Since there was no middle-man (prophet) speaking He would have to say, "but I say unto you" in addressing the people.

One could not show "love and mercy" where the Law was concerned because the Law was of the letter and love and mercy was of the spirit. Men were confined by the lack of the Holy Spirit to observe only the letter of the law. This is what the conflict between Jesus and the religious leaders was all about. Jesus' presentation of the spirit of the intent of the law it contrasted with the religious leaders' who taught the letter of the law. Without the Spirit there is no "spirit" of the law, and the Spirit only overshadowed prophets, priests, and kings, not Pharisees or Sadducees.

Well maybe some definitions are in order here.
The "TEN COMMANDMENTS" are just those given to Moses on the mountain in Exod 20:1-17
However, there were hundreds of other commandments given to Israel. Here are a few...
Exod 21:35 And if one man's ox hurt another's, that he die; then they shall sell the live ox, and divide the money of it; and the dead ox also they shall divide.
Lev 18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.
Lev 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.
Deut 17:1 Thou shalt not sacrifice unto the LORD thy God any bullock, or sheep, wherein is blemish, or any evilfavouredness: for that is an abomination unto the LORD thy God.
Exod 21:28 If an ox gore a man or a woman, that they die: then the ox shall be surely stoned, and his flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be quit.

Some of the sins against the law could be covered by animal sacrifices done by a priest.
The pharisee's believed in following the law to the letter (even the one's who weren't God's laws)
John 8:4 they *said to Him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act.
John 8:5 "Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?"
On top of these there were the "traditions" of the pharisee's and scribes. ( Mark 7:3-9; ) That weren't from God.

I'm sure you know that adultery cannot be committed by one person against the marriage covenant. Where's the man?

In the sermon of the mount, (Matt chaps 5-7) Jesus talks about the law quite a bit, and mentions a lot of it has changed.
But most of it didn't get easier, it got harder.
Mat 5:17 "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
Mat 5:18 "For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.

Yes, maybe men have changed the law, but did Jesus change the law as well?

Jesus added lust to the commandment of adultery.
Mat 5:27 "You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY';
Mat 5:28 but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

So, Jesus changed the Law He gave Moses for the people? Any change in the Law would destroy the Law. And since the Law is heavy with metaphor and symbolism and imagery of the priestly function and identity of the Messiah, for Jesus to change the Law would be tantamount to Jesus destroying Himself. I don't think Jesus changed any part of the Law He gave Moses back in the day.

Divorce was not one of the "TEN" commandments, but it was something God was against. (Mal 2:16; )
Jesus added to the law of divorce, now he says you can only get divorced for this one reason.
Mat 5:31 "It was said, 'WHOEVER SENDS HIS WIFE AWAY, LET HIM GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE';
Mat 5:32 but I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

A bill of divorcement was given by Moses because of the hardness of the heart of those affected by "it" (adultery). Jesus took them to the beginning and re-iterated that what God had joined together let not man tear asunder (Matt. 19:8 ).

Jesus went on to say, not only should you not swear an oath on God, but you shouldn't swear an oath at all upon anything.
Mat 5:33 "Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FALSE VOWS, BUT SHALL FULFILL YOUR VOWS TO THE LORD.'
Mat 5:34 "But I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,

Operative word is "false" vows, yes?
God keeps His Word, He desires His people keep theirs, too.
Vows are permitted by the Law. Just keep them is what Jesus is saying.

He says love not only your neighbors, but adds to pray for your enemies.
Mat 5:43 "You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR and hate your enemy.'
Mat 5:44 "But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
Mat 5:45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

Mat 7:26 "Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.

Once a person becomes born again from above and baptized into the Body of Christ at the moment of this conversion is seen by God as having fulfilled the Law as Christ did. In this we, from God's perspective, do "practice righteousness."

Jesus repeats many of the commandments in other places in the New Testament.

For example...
Mat 15:4 "For God said, 'HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER,' and, 'HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH.'
Mark 10:19 "You know the commandments, 'DO NOT MURDER, DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, Do not defraud, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER.'"

Yes. Agreed.

Having said all this, I believe we are saved by grace and not by works or good deeds, not even by following the commandments. But I believe Jesus wants us to try.
John 14:15 "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
John 14:21 "He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him."
John 15:10 "If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love.
1 Jn 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments.

It's not an issue of trying when one becomes baptized into the Body of Christ, it's a matter of fulfilling the Law as Christ did (from God's perspective, that is).

In Matt 22:36-40 we see all of this boiled down to two commandments, but really... can you break any of the 10 commandments, and not break one of these two? ( Mark 12:30-31; )

I don't think it is a "boiled down to" thing, but more of a "performing the Law perfectly results in the person doing the love God and love your brethren" kinda thing. In other words, to obey the Law does proved you love God and your neighbor. You'd be surprised as to who "your neighbor" really is.
Can you handle the truth?
