Baptized by the Holy Spirit?

Hallo everyone.

I have a quick question, or let me put it this way. I believe that when you get baptized by the Holy Spirit, you need someone to lay hands on you to be able to be baptized. That is the way I got baptized and I spoke in tongues as the sign that I have just been baptized.

Now, I'm not to sure but a lady that works with me, we are kind of close, but the Lord lays it on my heart that she needs to get baptized by the laying on of hands. But she says that she's already baptized and she did it herself. I don't know, but that just don't sound right. To baptize yourself?

Anyway, I know that in God's word it say that whoever asks for the Holy Spirit will receive. I really don't have enough back-up to convince her. I appoach her just a few minutes ago about it, its as if I'm trying to get a cat into water, It's just not happening.

Please help. I know that Father God never forces Himself on us or on no one. He is very gentle, but why do I keep on feeling the urge that she will be able to overcome trails in her life much more easier when on the power of the Holy Spirit and not on her own power or understanding, for she doen't understand allot of things, like as if she's confused the whole time about God's word and God's ways / will. She also has no Spiritual Gift whatsoever and that to me, is a big sign that she has not been batized by the Holy Spirit.

I will definitely not force anything on anyone, I told her that we will leave it in the hands of the Holy Spirit and in the Name of Jesus, I plant a seed in her, and if it's grows, she knows where to find me, if she decides to be baptized.

I know I'm only the instrament, the firt person God baptized through me, I told Him that I'm not qualified, but He said that He makes me qualified, so please don't think I walk around wanting to baptize all and everyone I meat. The Father layed it upon my heart to speak to her, and I did, it was very aquard, but then again, I'll rather be a fool for Jesus, then to make Him the fool.

Thank you for reading my letter.
Any advice and some good scriptures to back this will help allot.

Thanks again.

Blessings in our Jesus to you.

Hi sister Sheep!! When I received the Baptism of Love I had about 4 people around me!! LOL They were not allowed to touch me though,I did not, nor do I liked to be touched by another, unless I know them.

God knowing this, allowed me to receive directly from his touch. I knew a young lady of was being prayed for to receive, and she did not, until later that day, she went into the comfort room, and there she received!! LOL I know in the Book of Acts, we are told the disciples laid hands on some to receive.

But I also have found out, that we cannot limit the power of the Lord to what other people say,as to how the Lord only can move like this,or like that. Healing is also something many have a problem with.Well God always heals this way or that way. But God has no limits. And Gods ways are not mans!

Example!! Mark 8:22-26!!) Jesus did what???? Spit on the mans eyes????verse 23! WHY???? Because my dear sister he could! Showing God has no limits to man words! God is God! He will do as he wants, when he wants!

I used to look to put the Lord in a bottle, like a genie or something!! LOL I had to learn, that the Lord moves according to ones faith, and to ones need at that time. Not what others think, or expect. Just a thought for you.

We all wished to be used by the Lord, what we do not know,is how much, or how little that use is required. No matter how little or how much we are used, the point is, that we are used!

In this, we can always be thankful, and always be careful to give all praise and honer unto the correct person, who gives these gifts unto another. I remember, when I was God's great man of faith and power!! I had to learn the hard way! I would say, well if you wish to receive from the Lord, you must come to me???

WOW!! How dum! How Boastful!! HOW Prideful! Well God knocked me down a few pegs after this!! Now I understand who God needs!! He needs faith,he needs a belief in what only he can give and do!( luke 1:37) He needs a humble, content person in HIM! God created the World without my say so. I believe God does not need my permission to give his gifts, as he sees fit to,and I know you feel the same way as well!

Your faith, your kindness, yes having them see Jesus in you,is more then enough! For what they see is sister sheep in Christ, not next to him.( john 3:30-31) We are there not to increase, but rather to have Jesus in us increase. And we are thankful that the Lord would use us as a tool to love another in him!! amen!

You will get many different opinions about this on this website, as it has been discussed frequently in the past.

I believe you receive the Holy Spirit upon the moment of salvation. I also do not believe it says anywhere in the Bible that you MUST speak in tongues in order to have the Holy Spirit. I know some churches teach this. They use Acts 2 and 19:6 as examples. While I believe it CAN happen this way, I don't believe it HAS to happen this way. Not everyone has the gift of tongues.

Acts 2:1-4 (King James Version)

1And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Who laid hands on these people? If they did not need someone laying hands on them, why do you?

Your lady friend did not baptize herself. If she is baptised in the HOLY SPIRIT she was babtized by the HOLY SPIRIT

Sheep: I can't remember posting to anyone from Africa before, I am glad to do so. I read your profile, one thing you mentioned I do have a concern for. The SHACK is a very unbiblical book, I would trash it ASAP.

I am unsure where you get the laying on of hands to be baptised in the Holy Spirit. The holy Spirit is given to us as a deposit in our life upon surrendering to Jesus Christ. Tongues is the least desireable gift of all. The GIFTS are just that gifts. If we require speaking in tongues as proof of salvation, is that not a sign of works? In other words if we are godly enough we get to speak in tongues? If Paul says tongues is the least of the gifts, than what about the gifts of helps, giving, preaching, theaching, etc?

Having been a pastor I wondered why many more people did not think the other gifts according to paul were far better?

You mention in your profile that baptism is in the name of jeseu only. Did I get that right? Matt. 28:30 tells us the say the Father Son and the Holy Spirit. Do you believe in the Trinity? Some Denominations do not accept the Trinity that's why I ask.

May I suggest that it's far, far better to be a witness and tell other unssaved people than to lay hands on them, or do you have a verse that says we need to lay hands on them rather than witness?

I don't want to sound like a old grump challenging you, I just want you to stand your ground in Scripture in context to make sure what you think you believe is actually real Doctrine not dogma. Blessings sheep,

Acts 8:9-17 (King James Version)

9But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:
10To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God.
11And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.
12But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
13Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.
14Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
15Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
16(For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
17Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

Acts 19:1-3 (King James Version)

1And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
2He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
3And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.

Well here are two instances of someone being saved but not having the baptism of the HOLY SPIRIT.

Keep searching for more. When you get saved you do get the HOLY SPIRIT, but when you get the baptism of the HOLY SPIRIT you get HIS power. Tongues is only a sign and though its highly desirable its not the baptism itself.

Hello, I would like to mention this, that the Holy Spirit responds to the Word of God. I have attached Acts 10:34-47 as an example. In this case, Peter is relaying the Gospel to the house of Cornelius, a Gentile Centurion in the Roman army. As Peter testifies, the Holy Spirit falls upon those listening and as they believed God's Word, they received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. This took place even before they were baptized in water. From this we can be certain that there is no specific formula, only belief in God's Word concerning Jesus Christ, who died and rose again the third day.

34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:
35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.
36 The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:)
37 That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;
38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:
40 Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;
41 Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.
42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.
43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

Verse 44 is of particular interest: While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

Thank you for the opportunity to share this great truth.

the following is my experience. hopefully you get something out of this read.
when i got the Ghost i didnt know what i was getting into. literaly. the preacher was talking about getting baptized and i was all antsy like a kid in a candy store while i was talking to the deacon. saying i wanna get baptized. cmon already. i wanna get "dunked" outside of church me and one of my friends was talking about me geting baptized with water. i thought thats what he was talking about. the deacon told me thats not what he was talking about. he began showing me scriptures in the bible. then there was a short waiting line and they would go in the room with the deacons and come out in a few minutes. i was thinking whats going on your not wet? when it was my time to go in they explained it and i was like i dont know about this but i will try it. i still wanted anything from God i could get. three people laid hands on me and i asked and my words changed into another language. i remember covering my mouth out of being surprized. i had no idea what was or had happened for awhile. not really. my point is how can one know what recieving the Holy Ghost is like if they havent ever experienced it. its a huge thing. words cant do it justice. so maybe this lady thinks she already has it. i thought the same. i thought i am already saved... i need to get baptized in water. many people equate salvation with recieving the Holy Spirit. I do however wanna say one thing. i dont think God is limited to us laying hands on for someone to recieve the spirit. i mean, what about those who are not around any spirit filled believers? and then they ask, would God not give it to them? also i have heard testimony of a man being baptized by fire like this: he had a vision of an outline of a man made of light. He claims he just knew it was the Holy spirit. he says it just came and "sat down" in him and no one laid hands on him. again, he says no one laid hands on him. and this guy is spirit filled, prays in tounges. and like b-a-c said it isnt a have to -to pray in tounges. really i dont think any of the gifts are a have to. if someone thinks to much of the gifts they usually forget about the gift giver. the gift giver is a have to.

Hi,

Cornelius and household received the Holy Spirit without Peter laying hands on them. Also Luke 11:5-13 where Jesus tells us to ask, seek, and knock for the Holy Spirit.

Baptism and receiving of the Holy Spirit are synonymous terms for the ONE and only event !! Yes, every person who receives the Holy Spirit for the ONE and only time, speaks in tongues.

But time is short and there are many deceivers out there.

Dear Farout.

My profile was last updated a year ago, so I can't even remember what I wrote there and I'm definitely trough allot of learning and growing in our Lord Jesus Christ since then and I DID NOT say you need to be baptized in the Name of Jesus only - I'm saying this without me even having to go check it up myself but yes, seems I have to do some updating

The Shack, well, it lead me very close to Jesus at that moment in my life. I was just fresh out of the occult and a cult religion and didn't believe in Jesus. The Shack was all I could get old of fast enough. And if God wants to tell you something, He'll even use writings on the back of a toilet door to say it to you. So, who cares if the book is crap, It made me fall in love with Jesus. By the way, I can't even remember where that book is, but it served its perpouse.

Thank you for you advice and concern. But I believe and know that I know I'm safe in the hands of Jesus Christ.

MY MY!!! A lot of buzz over this Ic!! First as tongues being the least of the gifts,I would like to point out very kindly that anything that has to do with Holy Spirit has no least to it. For tongues is a sign!! It is evidence to oneself, and to your very own faith.( 1 Cor 14:4) Number 2,If this was not important, to ones faith Paul would have never said this either. 1 Cor 14:18!!! Many leave out this scripture!! However, yes there is a however here as well! In the Church!!

And with very good reason!! What good is tongues to one who does not have understanding!! BUT!! When one runs out of words in English, which I sure have in the past!! It is a wonderful miracle to be able to speak unto God himself, even though my mind does not understand,God does!!( 1 Cor 14:2!!)

And that is as good as how Jesus taught us all to pray in English to him!( matt 6:5-15) The point being, we as believers can now pray without ceasing!! Because wherever we go, or whatever we do,we can always speak unto God himself!! That to me is very special!! For those who do not wish to,that is fine,I am not saying you have to!! Salvation is not about gifts, but about the ONE GIFT!! we all have received through our Jesus! But for those who wish to a more fuller life in Christ, without the Baptism, one can only go so far in following.

After salvation of ones soul, this was my next step in faith towards following Christ for me. I only speak for myself here,I do not wish to step on any toes, but truth does set us free, and to say we have no need of this,is not true. For if we did not have need of this,Paul would never have been so glad to have this wonderful gift from Holy Spirit! We have what we believe for,and we believe,to gain faith, and in that faith love, and in that love an example of having others see Jesus in us!! Praise God!

I would like to mention this, that the Holy Spirit responds to the Word of God.

Hi Robin.

Thank you for sharing this with me. I feel blessed just by these few words Jesus in you said - the Holy Spirit responds to God's Word. Amen to that, I got chills reading that!!!

Thank you dear brother for you compasion. We are all one body and we need each other. Thank you for helping me and sharing wisdom.

Dear eddieb.

Oh I had a good laugh just now when you said: "When I got the Ghost" ahahah funny.

anyway, I see allot of myself in you. I was exactly the same, like a kid in a candy store, I myself didn't know what's gonna happen. I thought they are going to baptize me in water and all that and the pastor asked me to lift my hands in the air. I asked him, why, what are we going to do now. And he said that I'm going to be baptized.

I couldn't believe it. I thought it was a major big thing (which it is, don't get me wrong) but I thought it was a huge ceremony and allot of bible reading and and. Funny how everyone think before they become a child of the Most High - ahhahah. So I lifted my hands in the air, and he asked me would I like to speak in tongues. I said, yes yes, deffinitely!!! I didn't know how I'm gonna get it but I just knew that is what Í'm going to have.

And so as we were praying I felt like someone just lit me on fire. I was burning alive, but a amazing feeling, great, out of this world. And then I was in God's throne room, whiter than you can immagine but very misty. I saw myself, being loosen from a bondage and I ran like a little girl would, to her Father and told Him (in my tongues) everything that happened to me, like everything the bullies did to me at school. And He just slid me behind His frok under His arm - like a hen would do with her chicks - and He gave me this loving smile (couldn't see His face though) but it was amazing.

I was babbling on and on in my spiritual language and felt like there was no end to it. Amazing is all I can say. Amazing.

Thank you my brother for sharing your experience with me, its special, and we only want that for others, nothing less. For the Holy Spirit is super duper great amazingly powerfull in His wonders and Majesty.

Lots of Blessings to you in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Praise God!

Hi Brother Brighthouse!!

Thank you for writing me twice on this thread, I knew that my brother will look up on me time to time :)

I absolutely agree with you about tongues. My spiritual language to the Lord is very special to me and it's not a once off thing or a thing that come and goes, its appart of you the rest of you life :) Its a cellphone that free for live and never has bad reception. Direct personal line to our Father God - not that I say other have not - but you know what I mean.

Yes, we can pray for hours on in our tongues, not that I tried before, but I know if I get started, my loose track of time. Really extraordinary!! If we're at a prayer group, I always have to force myself to stop, like closing a door in a strong river - difficult.

Anyway, I just wish that some brothers and sisters will stop beeing so rude to each other on this site, it's really heartbraking, I love TJ but some really so lack the love for each other and this is comming from my heart, we should always treat each other in love and respect, no matter how or what that person believe or how he understands the trinity. First walk a mile in another persons shoes and then see if you can turn around and judge them...

But yes, thats just my oppinion.

Thank you brother Bright, I realize now that you can never put the Holy Spirit in a box, He will go to extreme miles to save you. God loves us dearly and will go miles and miles to find a lost sheep. I know, ask me :) Hope to chat to you soon.

Lots of love in our Lord Jesus Christ.
