"Hitherto hath the Lord helped us.....1 Sam 7;12.

In 1876 the Sioux leader Crazy Horse joined forces with Sitting Bull to defeat General Armstrong Custer and his army at Little Bighorn.
Not much later starvation caused Crazy Horse to surrender to U.S. troops. Crazy Horse was killed while trying to escape.

Despite this sad conclusion to his life, he became a symbol of heroic leadership of a threatened people.

Today in the Black Hills he is commeroated with a monument to his memory - the Crazy Horse memorial.

Many years ago, the prophet Samuel used a much smaller memorial stone in a significant way. In the midst of a crucial battle with the Philistines, Samual called upon our to God on Israels behalf.

The Lord answered his prayer (1Sam. 7,12) In gratitude samuel set up a stone "and called its name Ebenezer, saying, "Thus far hath the Lord helped us" v12.

Samuel has set an example for our spiritual journey, and we also can use tangible reminders of God's faithfulness to help us worship and serve Him.

I'd rather have Jesus than silver or gold
I'd rather be His than have treasures untold
I'd rather be his than anything
This world affords today......

Psalm 73:25-26
Whom have I in heaven [but thee]? and [there is] none upon earth [that] I desire beside thee. My flesh and my heart faileth: [but] God [is] the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.
