At the end of His ministry, Jesus gave the Holy Spirit to His 11 disciples (John 20:22).
Did this cause them to be born again, with the Holy Spirit coming inside of them?
Just before ascending into heaven, Jesus instructed His large group of disciples/apostles:
"And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem,
but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me;
for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.
... you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses
to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." (Acts 1:4-8)
After Jesus ascended into Heaven, the Holy Spirit was sent to earth to permanently replace Him (John 14:16-26)
On the Day of Pentecost, the other 109(?) were born-again, and simultaneously
were baptized with the Holy Spirit (with the evidence of speaking in tongues).
This was the anointing required for them to start evangelizing (and begin the NT church):
“When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled
the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues,
as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit
and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:1-4)
In the NT church, they had a 5-fold ministry (given in the order of authority):
“And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists,
and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry,
for the edifying of the body of Christ …” (Ephesians 4:11-12)
In the NT church, there were 9 major spiritual gifts:
“Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:
… There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries,
but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.
But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit,
to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit,
to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles,
to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues,
to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things,
distributing to each one individually as He wills.” (1 Cor. 12:1-11)
(So much for God’s Spirit only being a “force”, as some church leaders have insisted.)
Let us understand that everything in the NT applies today … and for all time,
e.g. there are instructions for slaves and slave masters (and slavery exists today).
So, what has happened to all of this? This which has continued to be necessary to
evangelize the lost, run the churches successfully, train new disciples, etc.
Let us not use 1 Cor. 13:10 as an excuse, for “that which is perfect” refers to Jesus’ return.
