In Genesis 5:32, it is written: "And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth."

Noah was 600 at the beginning of the flood.

However in Genesis 11:10, it is written; "These are the generations of Shem: Shem was an hundred years old, and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood:"

So if Shem was 100 at the beginning of the flood, how could he be 100 years old two years later?

The New Testament begins with Matthew 1:1, "The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham."

Is David GOD?

It is in the grammar. Noah was five hundred years old: The colon simply means that the previous is introducing the following. and Noah begat... they are not directly tied to each other intrinsically. Shem, Ham and Japeth were not triplets. Shem was born when Noah was 503 and was 100 2 years after the flood. he was 97 the year of the flood.

Noah was 600 at the beginning of the flood.

Yes and Shem was 97.

However in Genesis 11:10, it is written; "These are the generations of Shem: Shem was an hundred years old, and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood:"

Exactly. Shem was 100 2 years after the flood. No contradiction.

So if Shem was 100 at the beginning of the flood, how could he be 100 years old two years later?

Your error came from thinking that Noah begat Shem when he was 500 when he was actually 503.

The New Testament begins with Matthew 1:1, "The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham."

[/QUOTE]

Jesus is the son of David through Mary his mother who is a direct descendant of David who is directly descended from Abraham. "the son of" merely means that they are in a direct descending from a forefather. You are the son of Noah as well as the son of Adam who is the son of God. See what I mean?

God the Father is God not David.

Bless you for your response, I didn't count on the Ma & Pa Kettle response but it graced my heart with its genuiness of faith.

(Ma & Pa Kettle do the math Video on You Tube - watch?v=cydcnQf0usg)

However, did you consider in the equation that maybe Noah was 500 when he begat Shem, and 499 when he begat Ham and 498 when he begat Japeth?

The reason for my suggestion is simply that if one is to believe your interpretation that Shem was 97 years old, then 2 years after the flood then he have been 99 years old, but it was a interesting read, thanks.

My math may be off as it depends upon what after the flood means. After the flood began? After it ended? I chose my numbers based upon the way I reasoned within myself how old one would have to be at what point. Regardless, I hope that you see what I was trying to do even if my numbers are goofed.

Fact one: Noah being 500 and the birth of his sons are not intrinsically tied together. This is what allows us to understand that we can work to find a proper age for Noah when Shem was born based upon all the other information given.

I started with the information that Shem was 100 two years after the flood. Whether this is from the beginning or end of the flood would change is date of birth. I chose 'after'. That makes him 98 at the end of the flood and 97 at the beginning. And then Noah would have been 503 when he begat him. These numbers are not fixed, but movable depending upon more exact information.

The only thing needed to remove the concept of a contradiction is the understanding that the text doesn't say that Noah was 500 when Shem was born.

I don't know anything of the youtube ma & pa kettle do the math video as I don't do to much youtubing.

In Christ,

Yes, the choices we make can either draw us nearer to the Truth, or away lead man from the Truth. Interestingly enought, the scripture just before the passage referencing Shem and the 2 years after the flood, it might shed some light on the issue.

Understanding the scriptural representation that Noah was born 1,056 years after the creation of mankind upon the earth. Then began on January 8th, in the 1,656th year, the fountains of the great deep broke up and the window of heaven opened and it rained for 40 days, and 40 nights for a period of 40 days of rain altogether, or did it rain for 40 days, and then for 40 nights for a period of 80 days in which the rain fell?

Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. John 11:9-10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

Not to change the subject, but in Genesis 6:7, had Noah's sons been begat at that time?

It wouldn't appear so. God gave men 120 years until he would wipe them out and it seems that this is the period of time that Noah built the ark in. That would make Noah 480 when God made the decision to flood the earth. And it seems Shem was born when Noah was 503 or so.

I am not particularly sure about the numbers though.

And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. Genesis 6:3

While I always found it curious how the LORD God could make the universe in six days, but it took 40 days to create a flood, but I guess that is here nor there.

It must be one of those mysteries.

LOL thank you for the laugh, I needed it. It says that it rained for 40 days and 40 nights but it never says that is how the entire earth was flooded. The combo was the fountains of the deep broke open along with the rain. I am betting the earth was flooded in a short time.
