So just what did the apostle James really mean when he said the following;

"For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all." James 2:10?

People try to use what James said to discourage people from even trying to keep God’s laws. They claim if you break just one you break them ALL, so there is no since in trying to keep them. They claim that God says we must keep His laws perfectly 24/7…and if we cannot do this we failed ALL of them. That is NOT what God said! That is NOT what James meant at all.

Let's look at the REST of what James wrote to get a better understanding.

Now if James, and the other writers of the bible, provided no other scriptures, it would appear that salvation was unattainable. Why? Because God is coming back to punish "sinners", and to sin is to break God's laws. If we took the above verse for face value only, along with a few others like; "For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.", or "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" it would be useless for ANYONE to have hope for salvation.

But thank God James, and the others writers, explained what they were saying. Let's start with James;

[8] If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:

So the very first thing James tells us to do is to KEEP A LAW! Now if James truly thought that to break one law is to break them all, knowing that no one is perfect, why would James start off by telling us to keep a law? Does that make sense? No it does not! Let's continue;

[9] But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.

Now James tells us, although you may love your neighbor, if you still have respect to persons, you have still committed a sin. So although you keep the one law of, loving your neighbor, if you break THIS ONE LAW, you are still a sinner. So it does not matter WHAT law you break, if you break ANY law it is AS IF you have broken them all. James goes on to explain this in the following verse;

[10] For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

Now let's read the next verse to see how James explains this;

[11] For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.

First off notice what commandments James is referring to, but more importantly, WHO it was that gave the commandments. The "he" here is none other than Jesus, and James explains to us if a person does not commit adultery, but yet kills, he is a sinner. The same would hold true for the following;

If a person goes their entire life without killing or stealing, but they are constantly bearing false witness against their neighbor, it would be no difference than if they had spent their entire life killing or stealing. Though they kept SOME of God's laws, yet broke just one, it would be AS THOUGH they broke any of the others, NOT that they broke them all!

What James is saying here is that there are no small sins nor big sins. There is no such thing as a little "white lie"! A LIE IS A LIE!! And as far as God is concerned A SIN IS A SIN! Let's read the above verse again;

[10] For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

So is James saying you are literally braking ALL of Gods laws if you break just one? No! He is not saying that at all! James is saying just what he explained in the verses that followed verse 10 above; A SIN IS A SIN!!!

Now let's look at what James says next. For some reason THESE verses never seem to be quoted with the rest;

[12] So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.

So here we see James endorsing keeping God's laws. Again, why would he tell us to do so? He tells us why in the NEXT VERSE;

[13] For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

Because if you know to do what God says and DO NOT, God will have NO MERCY on you when it is time for judgment!! Just what standard do you think it will be that God's uses to judge man? Whether man obeyed and kept His laws or not!

Now let's look at just a few more endorsements for keeping God's Laws;

Matt.19
[17] And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
[18] He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,
[19] Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Now do you think that this advice that Jesus gives here would NOT work after His death? Jesus tells us we are to live by ALL of His words. He never says to live by these words until I die, but then live by these OTHER words after my death!

John.14
[15] If ye love me, keep my commandments.
[21] He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

John.15
[10] If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

1Cor.7
[19] Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God.

1John.2
[3] And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
[4] He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

1John.3
[22] And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
[24] And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

1John.5
[2] By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
[3] For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

2John.1
[6] And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.

Rev.14
[12] Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

Rev.22
[14] Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

From the very beginning of man's life here on Earth until man dies, God has asked only one thing of him; TO OBEY HIM! And from Gen. to Rev. the same theme is preached; Obey God and keep his commandments.

But there will be those of you that listen to some that try to tell you it is useless to even try to keep God's laws, because THEY don't understand (1) verse!

Please go and re-read what James is telling us.

- He IS NOT saying if you break one law you are breaking ALL of God's laws!

- He IS NOT saying it is useless to try to keep God's Laws!

Think about it.....I'm sure there are those that will never murder someone, and will die NOT having done so. That person that died, and NEVER murdered anyone DID NOT break that law. So they DID NOT break ALL of Gods laws.

There are some that have NEVER stolen one item in their life. THAT person did not break THAT law, so he DID NOT break ALL of Gods laws.

But if the person that never murdered, or the one that never stole, was a constant liar HE IS A SINNER!

Did they break ALL of God's laws? No they did not! But breaking just one of them is THE SAME as breaking ANY of the others! Why? Because a SIN IS A SIN, not 1 sin is ALL sins!

I pray there will be those that use common sense and see that, just because you do not keep God's laws perfectly DOES NOT mean you are not to try to keep His commandments.
God NEVER said we are not to TRY to keep His laws. From Gen. to Rev. God tells us TO keep His laws!

Pray and ask God for understanding and wisdom.

Hello Eccl12v13.

Exactly who was the letter of James addressed to Eccl12v13?

I will quote the first verse for you.

"James, a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,
To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad" (James 1, NKJV)

Please note that this letter is addressed to the twelve tribes
of Israel. This audience is Jewish and well acquainted with the
Mosaic Law.

Hence, I am not surprised that there is reference to law.

Do you see this letter from the bondservant James as
being written to you Eccl12v13?

So you believe that just because James addresed the twelve tribes, this letter was NOT meant for the rest of mankind?

Let's read what God has to say about His words; Gen. to Rev.!

"And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God."

"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:"

"Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:"

"For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."

Let me ask you...do you believe the following scriptures were ONLY for the twelve tribes also?

James 1
[13] Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:
[14] But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
[15] Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

Is this not good advice for ALL of mankind? Will not sin, when it is finished bring death to ALL if they do not repent?

[17] Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Will God only give good perfect gifts to the 12 tribes?

[21] Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

Will the grafted word of God save ONLY the 12 tribes?

[25] But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

Will only those of the 12 tribes that do God's word ONLY be blessed in his deed?

This is just the FIRST chapter of James. Do you not think there are more words of advice in the other 4 chapters, that ALL of mankind could not benefit from?

YES! I believe this letter from the bondservant James was not only written to me.....but just as God's word tells us......

"It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God."

In reply.

In your reply to my question you gave me this response.

"So you believe that just because James addresed the twelve tribes, this letter was NOT meant for the rest of mankind?"

You claimed that I inferred that this letter "was NOT meant for the rest of mankind". Now let us be precise at this point Eccl12v13.

Please tell me where I stated what you claimed.

Yes! Let's be precise; I asked QUESTION'S, I did NOT make STATEMENT'S!

Question?

This introduction in the letter of James signals to the
reader that this is a letter addressed to a Jewish
audience.

Any fault so far Eccl12v13?

Lets'keep going Eccl12v13.

I want to know Eccl12v13 how you define
these two words?

1) Jew
2) Gentile

These two words are scattered throughout the New Testament.

Exactly who was the letter of James addressed to Eccl12v13?

I will quote the first verse for you.

"James, a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,
To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad" (James 1, NKJV)

"abroad" - hmmm.. so this letter didn't even apply to the believing Jews in Israel. Only those "scattered abroad". Well, I for one, believe that the principles in James apply to all believers.

While we certainly have "freedom" in Christ, I don't take this as a license to sin. There is grace in case we do sin, but...

Rom 6:1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase?
Rom 6:2 May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?

On one hand, we don't want too much legalism, but on the other hand we don't want to continue living in sin and claiming "it doesn't matter" because we are Christians.

Amen, but I would say that we don't want any legalism.

According to Romans 11, our relationship to Israel is dependent on our relationship with Messiah. If we are in Him, we are now in Israel, as they are 'the Olive Tree'. With that in mind, can we really claim that this book is not for everyone?

I want to know Eccl12v13 how you define
these two words?

1) Jew
2) Gentile

These two words are scattered throughout the New Testament.

I do not have a definition. God's word's tell me what these words mean.

Jew: One of the 12 tribes of the nation of Israel before the nation was divided. After the 12 tribes were divided, two of the tribes took on the name Judah; the tribe of Benjamin and the tribe of Judah.

Gentile: A descendant of Japheth, also a nation of people. Contrary to what most believe a Gentile is NOT anyone that is not a Jew, they are a nation of people.

.

I don't know what 'page' everyone is on, but I do know that God's word applies to everyone, and what He says is always true.

I don't know what 'page' everyone is on, but I do know that God's word applies to everyone, and what He says is always true.

I would have to agree. God's words, as stated before, confirms this;

But it seems there are some that do NOT believe in ALL of God's words.

So what's the name of the gentile nation?

So what's the name of the gentile nation?

I thought I would ask you. Shouldn't the mod know these things? I don't know? They may go by many names I'm sure. Just as there are 12 tribes in the nation of Israel, there may be 1 or 21 tribes of the nation of the Gentiles. If you really need to know search God's word for the answer you seek.

Like I stated...most are not even aware that Gentile in a nation of people. Most believe that a Gentile is anyone other than a Jew. But God's word tells us this is not true.

So just what did the apostle James really mean when he said the following;

"For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all." James 2:10?

Over and over again we try to explain.

James was essentially saying here, that whoever wants to keep the law and gain forgiveness and their salvation, then they must keep all of the laws perfectly and all the time...that is the requirement for living under the law.

Do you try to gain your forgiveness and salvation by observing the Old Covenant Laws or do you do it by accepting and living under the New Covenant of love and grace?

So just what did the apostle James really mean when he said the following;

"For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all." James 2:10?

whoever wants to keep the law and gain forgiveness and their salvation, then they must keep all of the laws perfectly and all the time...

Wow! And just where can the readers read that the holy spirit had James to write, "Whoever wants to keep the law and gain forgiveness and their salvation, then they must keep ALL of the laws perfectly and ALL of the time."? Book, chap. and verse please!

Readers...I know there are those of you that can clearly see that James could NOT be saying what is claimed above. Let's read it again....

[10] For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

Now let's read the next verse to see how James explains this;

[11] For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.

Now readers....at what point did James say "Whoever wants to keep the law and gain forgiveness and their salvation, then they must keep ALL of the laws perfectly and ALL of the time."?

Did ANYONE get that from James verses?

James tells us this; If you do not commit adultery BUT if you kill, you have broken God's laws. Plain and simple!

James could just have easily said the following; If you do not lie, but you steal, you have broken God's laws.

Then he could have said, If you do not covet, but you lie you have broken God's laws.

Then he could have said, If you do not kill, but you have respect of persons you have broken God's laws.

James could have gone on and on with every possible combination until he quoted ALL of God's laws.....but he didn't!

So what did the holy spirit have James write instead of ALL of those combinations? The holy spirit told James to just say this;

"For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all."

If you break one it's just like breaking them ALL!

How simple is that?

.

What you say is so simple, I can't believe you can turn things around so much.
I said in my previous thread that:"James was essentially saying". Do you honestly not know what "essentially" means? It means not a quote but a comentary on his words. Also, I am saying that James was telling them that they can not keep the laws for their salvation, that James was saying it was impossible to keep the laws and that Jesus was the only way to salvation.

If you break one it's just like breaking them ALL!

How simple is that?

What I have continued to say is not contrary to the above statement of yours. I tell you what is simple: You simply live under the Law or you don't believe in living under the Law, you can't have it both ways!

Scriptures on this matter of this on going thread, are clear to me but, you are confusing...I just don't know what you think for sure; you keep going in circles. One minute you appear to believe that we are to live under the Old Covenant Laws for our salvation then, the next moment you say the opposite.

Here is an example of you going in circles.
You created this original post and this is a question you asked:
So just what did the apostle James really mean when he said the following;

"For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all."
James 2:10?

All I was doing was answering your question what James really meant.....It was your question..LOL..and you try to chastise me for completing your request...now it is my turn....WOW.

Also, how about letting the "Readers" ,as you say, decide for themselves, which they are fully capable of with out you telling them and directling them what to believe.

Ok....tell us...again....how do you get what you claim above from the following 2 verses?

[10] For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
[11] For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.

Where does James say ALL that you claim?

Where does James say that, "...they can not keep the laws for their salvation..."? Where? Which Chap and verse please!

God tells us what is needed for salvation;

Heb.5
[8] Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
[9] And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him.

God tells us that eternal salvation come to ALL that obey.

God is the master...we are the servants. Servants do the will of God. We are to obey for salvation. You cannot serve with faith...you serve with actions, works and deeds!

.

OK this is the 2nd of these threads I am closing Eccl12v13, consider this your warning! Stop creating threads that stir up nothing but debate and flaming. You even had the nerve to be smart towards a Sr mod here as well as a exp man of God. Tone it down or take it elsewhere!
