Dried Fruit

Does anyone know how to dry fruit? I've recently tried slow drying at a low heat apples and melons in the oven but it didn't work. Aside from buying a machine for this, does anyone know of another way? Buying dried fruit is an option, but a very expensive one. If I can do this myself, I would prefer to do so.
