If you were anticipating brain surgery, I suspect you would want to be sure the surgeon got "A" in " Brain Operation 101"! There are some things in life where inaccuracy is not an option! Interpreting the scared Word of God is one of them:
"Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved..a workman who has no
Cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [ rightly handling and skillfully teaching ] the Word of Truth
Ignorant ( literally: untaught ) and unstable people distort [ the ].
Scriptures, to their own destruction." 2 Timothy 2:15; Amplified; 2 Peter 3:16.

As lay-people, we have a responsibility to correctly examine the Scripture, since bad doctrine usually leads to bad living. Here are 10 basic Biblical Principles

1 Work from the assumption that the Bible is authoritative.

2 The Bible interprets itself; Scripture best explains Scripture.

3 Interpret personal experience in the light of Scripture and not Scripture in light of personal experience.

4 Biblical examples are authoritative only when supported by a command.

5 Scripture has only one meaning and should be taken literally.

6 Interpret Words in harmony with their meaning in times of the author.

7 Interpret a word in relation to its sentence and context; a passage in harmony with its context.

8 Since Scripture originated in a historical context, it can be understood only in light of Biblical history.

9 Historical facts or events become symbols of spiritual truths only if the Scriptures so design them.

10 When two doctrines taught in the Bible appear to be contradictory, accept both as Scriptural in the confident belief that they resolve themselves into a higher unity. :shade::wink:

Good idea Yort and let's look at your statement here, "lay-people" what does it mean and where do you find it in the scriptures?

Some things are literal and some symbolic.
One example would be Jesus as a Lamb:
Rev 5:6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.

this is symbolic of His sacrifice and He is not found walking around on all fours.
Another example is the image in Daniel Chapter 2 where we are actually given the symbols and the meanings of those same symbols.

Dan 2:31 Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible.
Dan 2:32 This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass,
Dan 2:33 His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay.
Dan 2:34 Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.
Dan 2:35 Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.
Dan 2:36 This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king.
Dan 2:37 Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.
Dan 2:38 And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.
Dan 2:39 And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.
Dan 2:40 And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise.
Dan 2:41 And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters' clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.
Dan 2:42 And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.
Dan 2:43 And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.
Dan 2:44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
Dan 2:45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.

Meaning and Scriptures

I believe that I was trying to put forth with the "Statement", "As Lay People", ones of COUNSEL, and those that CONSIDER.

*Scripture: The word "LAY", is translated from many different Hebrew and Greek words

*YASAD-( yaw-sad )-COUNSEL
1 Ex 18:19:Hearken now unto my voice, I will give the "COUNSEL". IN THE LAY or as the say in the doctor's office "LAYMENS", here the writer is say, ( LISTEN TO ME )

2 Acts 20:27:For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God. *Note there is literally the same text in verse 20, in respect. The word SHUNNED in the in the verse means " TO KEEP BACK".
What would the writer be able to keep back? WHAT HE KNOW'S!

APPLICATION TO THE STATEMENT I MADE;" we have the responsibility to correctly examine the Scripture".

Sum-( soom )-Hebrew-Translate-----Consider

1 Judges 19:30: And it was, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: "CONDSIDER" of it, [ TAKE ADVICE ], and [ EPEAK YOUR MIND ].

Using the thought of CONSIDER here, I believe I was trying to say, "CONSIDER IT YOUR RESPONSIBILITY".

2 At the back end of the STATEMENT "Bad Doctrine, Bad Living", look at this,

Isaiah 1:3: The ox knoweth his owner, and the *** his master's CRIB: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not CONSIDER.
CRIB- the stall where it is fed ( Proverbs 14:4 )
Not know---namely his owner, as the parallelism requires; that is, not recognize Him as such (Ex 19:5 ), equivalent to "my people," ( John 1:10,11 )m
Application-is in our consideration of our responsibility, being correct to examine Scripture.
I believe all in all I posted that with the thought of 101, somebody just might have needed to know.
Now that's a lot of sugar for a dime.:shade::shock:

Now that seems confusing. In your own words who do you consider "lay people" and is it in reference to the clergy/laity system?

Yort: There are a number of things I would like to respond to regarding your post - as time allows - but I want to start with your point #10. Quote, "When two doctrines taught in the Bible appear to be contradictory, accept both as Scriptural in the confident belief that they resolve themselves into a higher unity."

I am not sure where this thought came from - whether it is yours or you are quoting someone else - but it is totally out of harmony with the principles of Biblical Interpretation.

One of the four main principles of Biblical Interpretation is what is known as the Synthesis Principle. It is also known as Analogia Scriptura. Simply stated, this principle means that not only does the Bible NOT contradict itself, but it CANNOT contradict itself. Why? Because “God is not the Author of confusion.” If one arrives at an understanding of a passage of Scripture that seemingly contradicts a clear truth found elsewhere in Scripture, our understanding/interpretation CANNOT BE CORRECT. At these times, Scripture must be compared with Scripture until there is harmonious reconciliation of the teachings. BLESSINGS. Doc

Man This Boxs Is Getting Tight!

In the setting, I would think the one with the ability.

As to the "Person" , The Holy Spirit. Example; Man reads Scripture, something isn't quiet right, man searches to limits, in the end man wait along time for. Revelation from God.

Is that day light I see. That's right.

Not sure here but was this an answer to my question???

Doc in ref to question 10

The question was worked around Baptism.

*It reads "[ APPEAR] to be".

* Such as may be seen to some who's walk, may be only a crawl

*Matthew 28:19 & Acts 2:38: give the appearance of contradictions, and yet are Both Scriptural and both resolve themselves into a higher unity.

Yort: Yes, I did notice you used the word "appear." But it must be understood that not even "apparent" contradictions can mutually co-exit in Scripture. They can, and must be, resolved. Contradictions are only "apparent" due in part to a lack of proper understanding of the principles of interpretation - including historical and grammatical principles.

And I have a question regarding your example. Where do you see a contradiction? BLESSINGS. Doc

P.S. It would be helpful in the future to let everyone know to whom you are responding. Otherwise, it can sometimes be confusing. Thanks.

Seems we disagree on this Yort, the clergy/laity system is a man-made religious idea.
