Why did GOD want war in the Old Testament and not today?

I don't ever remember reading in the Bible that God 'desired' war, that era of time was much different from today, it was necessary that's all we need to know. We shouldn't worry about the questions we have because I very much doubt they'll all be answered in this life, we're human it's natural to question things and be skeptical. But, that is why we're to have faith, faith in what God says, and what He does, believing that it was for the better, even if we can't understand, does that mean it wasn't? Nope, it doesn't, it just means we lack the knowledge to understand why exactly everything happened the way it did. Tell me, why is it people today think God doesn't understand our pain? Our questions? Why do we think God doesn't know good and He only knows how to be angry? Because it's true? Obviously not, it's only because we don't understand.

There is no special scripture, my husband just wants someones view point besides mine on why GOD allowed war in the time when the Old Testament was around & not war for today?

I agree with you, we shouldn't worry about certian questions.

But for those who believe in war, need these questions answered in order for them to understand why Jesus did not want us to go to war.

The periods of conquest in the Old Testament werent to settle land disputes, ideological beefs or to satisfy the caprice of some dictator like war as we know it. They were the necessary step in God's chosen nation, Israel, occupying the land he promised them. Additionally, the extermination of groups of people were judgements on sin and to prevent the Israelites from committing idolatry like the inhabitants of those lands.

Why did GOD want war in the Old Testament and not today?

The Apostles John and James wanted to send fire down on those who would not receive Jesus (Luke 9:52-54). The answer of Jesus, "(55) ...Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. (56) For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village."

The Old Testament or Old Covenant was another age of God. We as believers are under the New Testament or New Covenant (Jeremiah 33:31-34; Matthew 26:26-28; Hebrews 8:10-13)

Hebrews 10:12-18; speak of Jesus offering Himself as the final sacrifice. We as believers in Christ are told to love one another over and over (Matthew 22:37-40; James 2:8-9; Galatians 5:14; John 13:34-35).

8) Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
9) For this, Thou shalt not commint adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet: and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
10) Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

We are told by Paul the Law was our schoolmaster to bring unto Christ (Galatians 3:24). The Law was a different covenant of God with mankind; but now we are under the love of God through His grace given us though Christ Jesus who gave His life for us (John 15:13), and we are asked to give our lives for the brethren (I John 3:16).

In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus Christ gave this law of love (Matthew 5:43-48). We become perfect (not sinless) by loving our enemies (Matthew 5:48; Colossians 3:14; Proverbs 10:12; I Peter 4:8).

Revelation 13:10
"He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience of the saints."
IMPO, John is telling us we should be peacemakers here (see also Matthew 5:9).

But the Tanakh/Old Testament was another Covenant under a different time (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8) where God was trying to keep His people clean but we are clean thought the blood of Christ (I John 1:7). We are told if we don't love our brother we can't love God (I John 4:20-21). I Corinthians 13 is called the Love Chapter to kill in war would contradict this chapter.

Who said God wanted war?

If we can find Scripture stating this, we can work from there.


The Scriptures tell us we do war though, and when we understand that the wars we see outside in the world begin with a war within, we start seeing more clearly why this whole question is incorrect.

War was considered judgment on unrepentant peoples. There is no scripture prohibiting war even now and in fact we are promised that there will be wars and rumors of wars.

Who ever said that God stopped wanting war? Aren't we, in fact, in a war with the rulers, the authorities, the powers of this dark world, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms?

At the end of time, Jesus Himself will lead the saints in war.

I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. "He will rule them with an iron scepter." He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
