"So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them." Numbers 6:27 ESV
In 1979, archaeologist Gabriel Barkay uncovered two small silver scrolls at a burial site at Ketef Hinnom, just south of Jerusalem. The scrolls were worn as amulets inscribed with a shortened version of the priestly blessing found in Numbers 6:24-26: “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.”
These scroll amulets date back to the seventh century BC, putting them among the earliest written evidence of the covenantal name of God—Yahweh. This blessing has survived to modern times and can now be found as decorative art in Christian bookstores.
The intention of the priestly blessing was for God’s people to carry His name with them as evidence of the old covenant. But we have been given a new covenant. We don’t need to wear amulets with God’s name and blessing because we have them written on our hearts.
Second Corinthians 3:3 says, “And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.”
Are you living as a testament to the Lord?
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for writing Your name on my heart!
