Idols are worthless; they are ridiculous lies! On the day of reckoning they will all be destroyed. But the God of Israel is no idol! He is the Creator of everything that exists, including his people, his own special possession. The LORD of Heaven's Armies is his name! Jeremiah 51:18-19 NLT
In 1 Corinthians 10:14, the apostle Paul instructs the Christians living in Corinth, “My dear friends, flee from idolatry.” Today’s scripture verse tells you why you should make every effort to avoid idolatry—which in the biblical sense means the pursuit of any worldly thing to find fulfillment in life.
When most people hear the word idol, their minds go to statues or other man-made items that people in the past bowed down to and worshipped. But we have our own idols today, including material wealth, power, social status, sex, and countless other things. And when men pursue those things over God, those things are “worthless” and “ridiculous lies.”
Today’s verse ends with these words: “But the God of Israel is no idol!” That means the Lord is everything that worldly idols are not. He is of infinitely more value than anything you can pursue in this world to find peace and meaning in life. And it means that God Himself is eternal truth.
Man-made idols will one day be destroyed. But your God will live forever.
Prayer: Precious Lord, nothing this world has to offer compares with You. May I always look to You alone as my source of complete satisfaction and rid my life of anything and everything that could become an idol.
