“For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time. For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying) as a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.” (1 Timothy 2:5-7 NASB1995)
If we profess faith in Jesus Christ, he is to be the head, the captain, the Lord (Owner-Master) of our lives, with us as his servants who are following him in obedience to his commands, and for whom sin is no longer what we practice. By God-gifted and God-persuaded faith in Jesus Christ we are crucified with Christ in death to sin, and we are raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin, but as servants of God and of his righteousness, in holy living, by the grace of God, in the power of God.
For that is what is meant here by one God and one mediator between God and men. We are to have no other gods before him. He is to be it! The only one influencing and directing our lives. The only one we bow to and that we obey in surrender of our lives and our wills over to him. For Jesus gave his life up for us on that cross to put our sins to death with him so that by faith in him we will die to sin and live for God, according to his will and purpose for our lives, and not according to our own will and purpose for our lives.
For Jesus did not die on that cross just to forgive us our sins and to promise us heaven when we die. But he died to change us, to transform us, and to conform us to his likeness. He gave his life up for us so that we will give up our sinful flesh in order to serve him with our lives, to walk in his ways, to obey his commands, and to follow his leading in our lives in who he wants us to be, and in where he wants us to go, and in what he wants us to do. For we were bought back for God with the blood of Jesus shed for our sins.
But many are they who are professing faith in Jesus Christ with their lips, convinced that they are in relationship with him, and that heaven is secured for them when they die. But Jesus is not the Lord of their lives. He is not their One True God, for they worship the gods of the flesh, their idols, and the gods of selfishness, self-indulgence, lying, cheating, stealing, adultery, sexual immorality, pride, and so on, instead. Although they may call him, “Lord,” he is not Lord of their lives for they are the lord of their own lives.
And so God has appointed his servants and messengers to set the record straight, and to proclaim the truth of the gospel, and to refute the lies of the enemy of our souls. For Jesus gave his life up for us on that cross so that we will die to sin and obey God with our lives, not so we will continue living in deliberate and habitual sin against our Lord in open rebellion against him and against his commandments, while we profess his name. For he is to be our only God. And he wants all to confess to the truth and not to lie.
For Jesus Christ taught that to come to him we must deny self, take up our cross daily (die daily to sin), and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to living in sin and for self, we will lose our lives for eternity. But if we deny self, die daily to sin, by the Spirit, and we walk in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, in his power, then we have eternal life with God. For not everyone who calls him “Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one DOING (obeying) the will of God (see Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23).
So, if you are living for self, and not for God, and if your idols are your god, and not God, and if you are living in addiction to sin, and not in walks of obedience to the Lord, own up to it. Confess your sins. Admit that Jesus is not really your Lord. Then turn from your sins and now surrender your lives to Jesus Christ, in truth, and in righteousness, and in holy living, by the grace of God, and in the power of God. Relinquish control of your own life over to God/Jesus Christ, and let him now be truly your One True God – Father, Son Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit (one God in three persons).

As the Deer
By Martin J. Nystrom
Based off Psalm 42:1
As the deer panteth for the water
So my soul longeth after You
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You
You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You
