Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other's faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. Colossians 3:12-14

True humility allows you to recognize you’re a sinner saved by God’s grace and no better than other human beings. You’re a co-recipient of God’s grace, forgiveness, and love. You have fallen short of God’s perfect standard (see Romans 6:23), yet God did the remarkable and offered a rescue plan so comprehensive it made you part of His family. He orchestrated His plan to encompass a restored relationship between a perfect God and an imperfect people.

Humility takes the clothing of sober judgment and offers others tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, and love. You’re asked to model the behavior of your Father, God. He offers all of these things to you, so He’s not interested in seeing you treat others in a way that’s inferior to the way He treats them.

Christians are bound together by love, and it’s the choice to love that inspires harmony between God’s people. God didn’t love you because you deserved it. He loved you—period. The same should be said of you. Love others because you see people differently, not as wretched and irredeemable, but as loved by God and as a work in progress. Just like you.
