Here is a call for the endurance of the saints, those who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus. And I heard a voice from heaven saying, "Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on." "Blessed indeed," says the Spirit, "that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!" Revelation 14:12-13 ESV
Hard work is important. There is a lot of talk in the proverbs about the value of working hard and the dangers of laziness. Check out Proverbs 12:11, Proverbs 13:4, and Proverbs 14:23 to see just a few.
Rest is important too. On the seventh day of creation, God rested. When leading the Israelites through the wilderness, God provided twice the normal amount of manna on the sixth day so they could rest on the seventh.
Rest is one of the rewards for hard work. If you know you won’t be able to stop doing a job until it is finished, it behooves you to finish the job quickly so you can rest.
Living in a fallen world is hard work. That’s probably why there are so many verses that encourage it. But the reward is coming. Keep working hard because you’ll be able to rest soon. And it is going to be the best rest you’ve ever had.
Prayer: Lord, give me perspective. May the promised rest in the future give me strength to work hard today.
