Word on the Web
1 Timothy 6:17-21
Command those who are rich with things of this world not to be proud. Tell them to hope in God, not in their uncertain riches. God richly gives us everything to enjoy. Tell the rich people to do good, to be rich in doing good deeds, to be generous and ready to share. By doing that, they will be saving a treasure for themselves as a strong foundation for the future. Then they will be able to have the life that is true life.
Timothy, guard what God has trusted to you. Stay away from foolish, useless talk and from the arguments of what is falsely called "knowledge". By saying they have that "knowledge", some have missed the true faith.
"Guard what God has trusted to you". Not bad words with which to close Word on the Web. Why? 10 years ago, when I first set out to convince people this project was needed, I was sure that regularly spending time reading the Bible, in a way that was thought provoking, encouraging and challenging, was a key way that we begin to understand and grow in our faith.
I'd worked as an Evangelist with Church Army for a number of years and was tired of seeing people who made the first steps of faith getting washed away by the busyness of life around them and because they were never encouraged to think for themselves about what faith meant. It's easy to see someone converted for a short time to the faith, but what we are called to be is life long followers, disciples, of Jesus. My prayer is that over its life time Word on the Web has helped people put some roots down in the faith, that it has helped them learn to think and understand. How do we guard our faith? By feeding it through the Bible, prayer, being part of a Christian community in a church and by putting that faith into action in the way we live and treat others. If we do those things we too are building a 'strong foundation for the future', whatever that future may be.
So today Church Army feel's that others are better resourced and placed to offer what Word on the Web has tried to achieve in the past and this project comes to an end today. I want to finish by thanking those who made it possible for over 20 million emails to be sent over the course of the Word on the Web's life. Hundreds of people from all sorts of backgrounds have written notes for us, Andrew and Neil both had periods overseeing the project once I had moved on, and most of all Ruth and Alison, without whom the adventure would never have got off the ground, although their work was almost entirely unseen and unaccredited.
I also want to encourage you to guard your own faith by replacing Word on the Web with daily notes from Scripture Union. May you find in WordLive encouragement and challenge as you continue to guard and grow your own faith.
Thank you lord for all those who have contributed to Word on the Web over the past 10 years. Thank you for those who receive the notes each day. Please keep their faith safe and keep them close to you. Amen
