You Can Overcome Your Past!

‘Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, but he was the son of a harlot.’ Judges 11:1 NKJV

Sociologists tell us that human behaviour is largely determined by two things: our parents and our environment. Judging by that, they’d have written Jephthah off as a lost cause! But not God. His Word says, ‘Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing.’ (Isaiah 43:18–19 NKJV)

When Jesus becomes Lord of your life, neither genes nor environment can prevent you from becoming everything He intends you to be. Before his life was over, Jephthah became famous as Israel’s youngest governor, and is listed among the Bible heroes in Hebrews chapter 11. That’s because God is a turnaround specialist! Maybe you were born in less-than-ideal circumstances, and you’re wondering if you can ever overcome them. The answer is yes! So the next time someone tries to use your past to put you down, remind them about Jephthah. The truth is, our God is awesome! He can lift the disadvantaged higher than those who have had every possible advantage. His strength is revealed and released in our weakness (see 2 Corinthians 12:9).

He specialises in using those who have been rejected. He used Joseph, a man thrown into a pit by his brothers and written off by his father as dead. He used David, a shepherd boy alienated and ignored by his family. He used Jesus, ‘the stone the builders rejected’ (Psalm 118:22 NIV), who went on to become ‘the chief cornerstone.’ (Luke 20:17 NKJV) And He can do the same for you. So be encouraged; God has a plan for your life and as you spend time with Him He will show you what it is.

Thank you, great post. This took awhile for me to apply to myself. But during the past few years I have spent alot of time alone with HIM, as I wrestled with extreme & tormenting depression and anxiety attacks, and (unrelated) loss of vision due to damaged retina. So, you all know, how when HE speaks to us it is hearable, but a different kind of hearing? As I spoke to HIM and prayed, HE would speak clarification to me in that voice, that's "inside", of what I asked questions about. Then I would say it out loud and it was like I was hearing and talking at the same time. Our Father knows everything about us, but HE is not looking at our past, or for mistakes. Our past sins, exist no more, to HIM. But continuing to bring them up can cause us to sin again, as those thoughts feed doubt and disbelief. But even then, HE is more concerned that with each fall, mistake, or even attack of the enemy, that WE stay focused on who we NOW are in HIM, and in TRUSTING HIM. HE will continue in transforming us as we go through this journey, and regardless of what we do, how we fall, or even how bad it was, everything rests on us TRUSTING in HIM, HIS great love for us, and in HIS faithfulness to HIS Word, of HIS promises to us. HE KNOWS that we are HIS and that despite the falls, we ARE growing & changing, and as we do, there will be less falling and more desire of doing the things that HE has called us to do. HIS big picture is of breaking Satan's hold on this World, saving us, teaching us the TRUTH of HIMSELF and HIS great love for us, healing us and in helping us help others, find and minister to the Lost, with much relationship interaction with HIM in between. Yeshua/Jesus gave us a few parables in which HE is making known to us the seriousness of GOD'S desire for us to be HIS children, HIS family, and how serious HE is of wanting US to TRUST HIM AS our Father. Yeshua/Jesus said "I am in the Father, the Father in me, and me in you", because of the great price HE paid for us, we are one in HIM. HE won't fail, and all we have to do is TRUST HIM, in everything, even when we feel too fallen, because HE won't LET us go. This may not
seem like anything new to those brethren who have been near to HIM for any length of time, but for me it was very much needed. And, as I wrote this post I tried to condense it, but I am remembering how each truth connected to so much more as I studied HIS Word.
