'Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.' 1 SAMUEL 3:9
God had big plans for Sam, he would become a great priest who would hear from God and help the Jews understand how to live as God's people. But right now Sam is a young lad, and he hears someone calling his name so He thinks it's the old priest, his boss, Eli shouting out for some help. The Bible says: Eli said, 'Son, I didn't call you. Go back to bed' (1 Samuel 3:7).
This all happened before Samuel knew God for himself. It was before the revelation of God had been given to him personally. After this happens a few times, Eli cottons on and tells Sam to keep listening to the voice, because it's God Himself who is trying to get Sam's attention. Next time Sam was ready to listen and do whatever God said. Jesus said: 'My sheep listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me'. He also said 'The sheep follow him because they know his voice (John 10).
Learning to recognize God's voice doesn't just happen overnight, because He speaks to us at different times, in different settings and in different ways. Through the Bible, a talk, a mate, a dream...be ready to hear from Him. He wants YOU to know Him personally, to know Him for yourself. Oh yeah, when you hear Him get ready to obey!
