The way up when life gets you down (1)

'ELIJAH WAS...JUST LIKE US.' JAMES 5:17

We all get down in the dumps now and then. Even the best of us; take Elijah. Fresh from a day's work of calling down fire from Heaven and slaying 850 evil priests and prophets (come on, we've all been there) Elijah gets an award-winning case of the blues. All that adrenalin catches up with him, and whilst his defences are down he gets depressed.

Lesson one:

When we're tired we're prime candidates for feeling down. On top of that he starts to lose the plot. After taking on an army of evil, he ends up doing a bunk because of one lousy old crone: Jezebel.Fear makes him get things out of perspective.

Lesson two:

Fear + exhaustion = disillusion. Finally, he becomes a total misery guts, leaving his servant, and going it alone in the desert. When he most needs support, a friend, someone to pick him up, he chooses the worst company: his own! Listen to how he cheers himself up: 'I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me' (1 Kings 19:10, NIV). 'And the Oscar for best self pitying speech goes to...'

Lesson three:

What's that old saying, 'a problem shared is a problem halved'. No microwave meals for one; if the blues set in, get yourself some help from someone who really cares, get yourself hooked up with God, He's got the biggest shoulder to cry on.

i was really moved to read this... thanks LLJ, one of my biggest enemy is 'self pitying'... maybe because i grew up differently.. iwas always insecure...physically. and i reason it out on why I want people out in my life. I often isolate myself when i have problems... 'Like 'leave me alone', 'im fine if ul just stop asking if 'im fine'' -drama, drama,drama...
Im also often extremes... they say Im really thoughtful and I really give all out sometimes-even when ive got nothing left for my self or even give the littlest that i have for myself.... but then when i stop caring, i just go stiff-numb, no hint of compassion or care. Ive been struggling with it for a long time now... if u saw my post at the counseling part, im still having hang overs, i grew careless in the ministry.:sad-animated: And i keep trying to fix my relationship with God... I want to be close to Him like before and even more... but I keep feeling that little shyness in drawing near to Him again.
