The 'R' word

'Observe people who are good at their work- skilled workers are always in demand and admired; they don't take a backseat to anyone.' Proverbs 22:29

On a list of your favourite words, responsibility is probably propping up the bottom along with exam and dentist. But think how life would be without any responsibilities. Your parents wouldn't have to provide you with a home, there would be no laws against anything at all, you couldn't do anything that involves working together; so no team sports. It's absolutely right to be thankful that God has created you to be responsible, hard working and skilled at what you do best.

Some people think that work, taking responsibility, is something that came after Adam and Eve got chucked out of the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3). Because they messed up, sin entered the world and so now we have to work. Gutted! But this isn't true; God actually designed us to work and be good and skilled at what we do right from the start.

God put Adam in the Garden '...to work and take care of it' (Genesis 2:15). He wasn't expecting Adam to make a naff job of it either! He 'put him in charge'. More importantly we know that God Himself works and rests (John 5:17, Genesis 2:2-3) so there is no way we can excuse ourselves. Work is one of our God-given responsibilities. Every day has 24 hours filled with opportunities to serve and to become better at what you do. So don't be scared of the 'R' word!
