Story time
'Your word is ... a light to my path.' Psalm 119:105
If you were asked what book had changed your life most, what would you say? Most people answer that question with 'The Bible' - but less than one person out of every seven even read it every day. Here are some of the favourite excuses why:
1)'I've not got time'. Really? Loads of the books in the Bible can be read in under 45 minutes - that's half the length of an episode of the X Factor!
2) 'I don't know where to start'. Break it into bite-sized chunks, and start with a gospel, looking at the life of Jesus
3) 'It's boring'. Are you a chick-lit kind of girl? Then read Ruth. An adventure guy? Check out Judges or Acts. Whatever you like, it's probably in there if you look
4) 'But I go to church - isn't that enough?' In a word - no!
5) 'It makes me uncomfortable'. When you don't know or completely understand what it says, it's easy to assume that it's all negative, but it's not. You'll only start to make sense of the Bible by reading it.
You wouldn't expect to get a 'Teach Yourself Japanese' CD, and learn the language without listening to it, would you? If you never look at and study the Bible, those five things may seem true - but if you make the time to give it a go, the more you read, the more sense it'll make. So get your bum in gear, dust off your Bible and get reading!
