Stewardship (4) - Why bother?
'... the lord of those servants ... settled accounts ...' Matthew 25:19
So, to recap. God gives us all good things, and we are stewards of them for Him. He gives us what we can cope with, and He will only expect us to do what we can. He wants us to do the right thing, and make these gifts grow - but He won't force us to. We get to make our own decisions.
This is great, but at the end of the day, why should we bother? One reason is before us: 'After a long time the lord of those stewards came and settled accounts with them'. (Matt 25:19) It may seem like it's been a long time since Jesus was here, and it may feel like it could be forever before He comes back, but He will come back. He hasn't changed His mind, or His plan. The first time, Jesus was here to save. The next time, He'll be here to reign; and when He does, He will reward His good stewards.
Check this out: 'If the master returns and finds that the servant has done a good job, there will be a reward' (Luke 12:43 NLT). He's coming back, and He'll be looking for those who have stewarded well. What more reason could you want than to please the King of kings Himself? So don't get weary or bogged down, but keep your eyes on the prize; and imaging JC saying 'Well done' to you when He returns. Awesome.
