Spot the deliberate mistake (1)
'Words of the wise ... should be heard ...' Ecclesiastes 9:17
Perhaps you got a shiny new guitar from Santa last week. Perhaps you've perfected some of your better guitar hero poses in the mirror. Perhaps you've styled yourself somewhere between Arctic Monkeys and Slash, for that retro feel. Who knows, maybe you've even rehearsed your acceptance speech for 'Sexiest Guitar Solo Ever to Grace the Airwaves' for next year's Brit awards. Now, all you have to do is learn to get a sound, other than that of cat's intestines being plucked by a gorilla, out of it. Yep, that's right, no matter how promising we look, we're all still a 'work in progress'; whether it's learning guitar or learning to be humble, the principle is the same: we learn by our mistakes.
Two top tips for you: First, recognise the bum notes. If you insist there's nothing wrong with your out-of-tune scales, you're only fooling your own ears. Everyone knows when you hit a bum note. Likewise everyone knows your weaknesses, so don't try and hide them. Learn from them!
Second, remember that practice makes perfect. Jimi Hendrix (ask your Dad) didn't fall out of his mother's womb playing 'Purple Haze', he persevered through all his years of bum notes. Likewise, learn to see failure as part of the road to success. Those who are willing to learn from their mistakes don't have to keep repeating them. So there you are, happy plucking!
