Made in God's Image (1)
'So God created humans to be like himself, he made men and women' GENESIS 1:27
Thousands of years ago, most people (especially the kings and emperors) believed that if you were a king or an emperor then you were created in the image of God. You were special, God's rep on earth. Which meant everyone should treat you like a god and worship you.
If the king made a statue or image of himself, they would worship that too! Being king was a cushy deal if you could get it. However, these words in Genesis take the deal to a whole new level. The author of Genesis reminds the readers that it wasn't just one special king or pharaoh that is made in God's image, but all humans! This was incredibly empowering.
The Israelites knew what it was to be a slave, to be bought and sold like the cows, sheep and donkeys. But Genesis told them that they weren't just animals that talk, they were like God. Wow!
Of course in today's modern society we don't think some people are more special than others, we don't worship people like gods and treat others like donkeys. We don't have images of these people to help us adore and worship them more...or do we? Don't be so desperate to be like the people you admire (or even worship.) You don't have to be thinner, cleverer, richer or famous to be special. You don't have to be like THEM coz you are already like HIM!
