Living by faith
'... all these ... gained [God's] approval.' Hebrews 11:39
Here we see two types of people (alive and dead) who gained God's approval by their faith. Now, if God saved you from death, you'd probably find it pretty easy to have faith in Him. But what about those who 'died not yet having in hand what was promised, but still believing' (Hebrews 11:13 TM). How did they do it?
'Pencil' went to North Korea on a mission trip with three friends. One day, they were attacked by the police, beaten, and taken away, because of their faith. Pencil hid, escaped, and didn't proclaim his faith. Later, Pencil said 'I want to learn how to be brave like my friends, and unafraid to share Jesus'. He returned to North Korea, and witnessed to the locals. Again, the police came - this time, he didn't run, but stood up for Jesus. They tortured and beat him, insisting he turn his back on Christianity - but failed.
Eventually, the police gave up and sent him to a prison camp. Did he give up telling people about Jesus, or stop believing, thinking that Jesus had left him? No! For two months, Pencil told the other prisoners and guards, 'Jesus is the reason I am able to go on', until he died from starvation.
Pencil knew he'd die unless he 'gave up' his faith - but still he believed that 'God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God' (Romans 8:28 NLT). Try and live by faith today, whatever comes your way.
