'Fear not, for I am with you' ISAIAH 41:10
A big part of listening to God is learning to hear what He says to us in the Bible. So it's important to know what the scriptures say. When you're about to make a wrong turn or a bad decision God can use His Word to give you a prod; that's because 'We plan the way we want to live, but only God makes us able to live it' (Proverbs 16:9 TM).
When you don't feel you've got what it takes to get the job done His voice will whisper: '...I'll give you a full life in the emptiest of places; firm muscles, strong bones. You'll be like a well-watered garden, a gurgling spring that never runs dry...' (Isaiah 58:11 TM).
You have an unfailing supply. When you run out of answers and don't know what to do He will reassure you: 'I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you' (Psalm 32:8 NIV). When the load gets too heavy to carry you'll hear His voice saying, 'Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you...' (Psalms 55:22 NIV).
Hearing God's voice may mean you have to sacrifice other things and deliberately tune out those other voices, but hearing Him correctly takes top priority. Nothing, absolutely nothing, is more important than learning to recognise God's voice when He speaks to you.
