Learning to hear God's voice
"His sheep follow him because they know his voice." JOHN 10:4 (NIV)
One evening two old friends got together. One told the other that he could hear 18 different kinds of crickets (grasshoppers) in his garden. The other was amazed; he'd lived around there for years and never even heard one! The difference was, this friend was a professor of the study of insects who'd learned to tell the difference between 200 different cricket calls with his natural ears. How mad is that! Looking back, the first friend wrote, 'I suddenly understood that a person must want to hear, and learn to hear, and there were many sounds I was not hearing.' It's not enough just to want to hear God's voice, we need to learn what it sounds like in all its amazing variety.
God speaks in loads of ways and one of those is through people. The problem is, when you only hear from God through someone else it's easy to ignore or doubt what you've heard. But when you know God is speaking right to you personally, you can't just ignore it. Jesus said, 'His sheep follow him because they know his voice' (John 10:3-4 NIV). Even the most useless of Bible characters did great things because they clearly knew God's voice when he spoke. Nothing in your life is more important than learning to know God's voice when He speaks to you!
