Happy Boxing Day!
'He will reply, "I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these; you did not do for me.' MATTHEW 25:45
No, it's not a day to celebrate the talents of Amir Khan or other incredible sportsman in the world of boxing! No it's not an excuse for you to belt your brother to bits or punch your sister's lights out! At one time, Boxing Day was a day to open 'Christmas boxes' and share the contents with the poor.
These boxes were wooden or clay containers where people placed gifts throughout the year; you'd see them on ships, in churches or in factories. What's happened? What do we do today? - Hit the shops to find the latest bargains! Go watch the football! Overeat AGAIN in front of the TV! It's not about helping those in need. It's about getting what we want; take take, take, me, me, me! This isn't Jesus; idea of Boxing Day!
In today's reading Jesus tells a story that lets us know that He wants us to help people; anyone and everyone who needs it! Life's not about 'What can I get for me?' but 'How can I help?' Listen '..."Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?" He will reply, "I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me."' Ouch! Jesus says that not helping others means we do not love Him.
