Festive spirit
'... be filled with the Spirit.' Ephesians 5:18
Mortifying, isn't it? Parents intoxicated over the festive season, Dad dancing around with his tie wrapped around his forehead, loved-up Mum drooling into his ear, and Nan putting the world to rights over a sherry and sprout cocktail. It's a funny thing being 'under the influence'; it makes you say and do things you wouldn't normally do. It's the same being 'under the influence' of God, or being 'filled with the Spirit': you gain a swagger about life, you feel like dancing, you get loved-up for God, you want to put the world to rights.
Ever noticed how some Christians can be loopy for Jesus? They seem to have their God stuff so much more sorted than you. Well, that's because they're intoxicated with God. Through planned Bible and prayer time, they're constantly filling themselves with the Spirit of God.
Those tricky obstacles that come our way ready to throw us off-course can so easily be overcome when we're tuned into the Spirit. Paul knew this well. He wrote to the Galatians: 'Walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh' (Gal 5:16 NAS). Walking by the Spirit means continually refilling yourself with God.
A car doesn't run on a tank of petrol forever, it needs refilling regularly. When life causes us to run dry, we need to go back to the fuel pump: the Holy Spirit.
