Daydream believer (1)

'He dreamed still another dream ...' Genesis 37:9

The lights go up. You assume centre-stage as the crowd sings your name. The first notes of your number one hit single, 'Your Life Would Suck Without Me', fill the arena. It's supposed to be a duet, but mid-song Leona cries off; she just can't compete with your high notes. You're just about to 'dedicate this next song to my pet budgie, Ralph', when BANG!

OK, so, you may get told off for day-dreaming at school. God, however, positively encourages it. The story of Joseph is sprinkled with dreams. It's daydreaming that first lands Joseph with a bad bout of sibling rivalry. Here's little Joseph launching into his best Andrew Lloyd Webber tune, meanwhile his brothers are cooking up plans to sell him into slavery. All because they're threatened by what Joseph dreams about.

There's a lesson for us: dreams often take a beating early on. Joseph teaches us to keep the dream alive. Not put off by his brothers' hatred, just four verses after his first dream, he's dreaming again. Only this time, bigger.

Another lesson here: don't let your flame be snuffed out by your nearest and dearest; keep the faith. What big, bright idea keeps giving you that funny fluttery feeling in your stomach? What sends your heart gasping for its breath? When your brain does that crystal ball thing what does it see? Joseph didn't let his dream die on the drawing board, he kept dreaming. Will you?
