You'd have to be pretty clueless to eat a picnic in a minefield, or perhaps to try telling Ricky Hatton that Man City are rubbish without expecting to get a black eye. It's the same with your faith-life. You're acting pretty na?ve if you think the devil isn't looking for his right moment to give you a slap or worse still blow you to smithereens.
The Bible gives us plenty of warning, 'Keep a cool head. Stay alert. The devil is poised to pounce, and would love nothing better than to catch you napping. Keep your guard up' (1Peter 5:8 TM).
So, how do you keep your guard up against a dirty fighter? First, jab him with the Word. God's Word is like a weapon. If your opponent comes at you with lies, you need truth to sort your head out.
Second, use the rabbit punch of prayer. Pray hard and long. Pray for a Godly perspective. Pray for God's strength. Pray for God's perseverance. Pray. Pray. Pray.
Third, upper cut with praise. God loves it when we can say, 'Life might be a female dog, BUT God is still good'. Satan hates that. You see, his plan is to take your eyes off God. But if he only succeeds in drawing you closer, he ends up on the canvas. And for the knockout hook? Easy: 'Resist the devil and he will flee' (James 4:7 NIV).
