Beaten at the death (1)
'...He has given us...a living hope...' 1 Peter 1:3
It's a bit of a funny old day, Easter Saturday. The worst day, actually, because it's the only day, when in the Christian story, Jesus is not alive. Where did he go for those 24 hours before his great come-back? Well, we discover today that what frightens us most, death, is another place that Jesus has been before us. We're not alone, he understands, He's already been there! We try to out-think death by putting our faith in medicine and science, with all its advances. We get fit, we eat right, we look after ourselves, and still death, eventually, despite all our efforts, catches us eventually. But get this: there is nothing to fear.
You see, the Man beaten to a pulp by the strongest of soldiers. The Man whipped, flogged and paraded through town. The Man hung on a cross dying the worst, agonizing death ever; well, by Sunday He's back! He's looked death square in the eye and come back with the greatest story ever told; resurrection. And what's more, He invites us into the tale, saying we can do the same, if we just have a little faith. If you've ever wondered if there is anything after we die, here's the evidence. That's what the Saturday can become all about; facing death, knowing it is not the end, but that resurrection is round the corner.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
