Against all odds

'I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.' Philippians 4:13

When David first arrived at King Saul's palace he was a simple, shabby unknown kid with a GCSE in sheep. His only skill was throwing stones on target. Yet pebble-tossing opened a door to his future as the head of Israel's royal family.

Lesson: God can take something small in your hands and make it enormous in His. Yeah, you say, but don't you need qualifications and endorsements and all that before you can do anything full-size for God? David didn't own a pair of army boots, he hadn't scaled the balance beams and tunnel ropes of army training, he couldn't even fit into the uniform. All he did was believe in God and made himself available.

All God wants of you is a dose of faith and to be open to His offer. When you give God what you've got, He gives you what He's got and that makes your odds unbeatable.

The Bible has promises to back this up: 'With God on my side I'm fearless, afraid of no one and nothing' (Ps. 27:1 TM). 'Stand your ground. And don't hold back. Throw yourselves into the work of the Master, confident that nothing you do for Him is a waste of time or effort' (1 Cor. 15:58 TM). 'I can do everything through Him who gives me strength' (Phil. 4:13 NIV).

'I pray for good fortune in everything you do, and for your good health - that your everyday affairs prosper, as well as your soul' (3 John 2 TM).
