You or me?

'Honour others more than you do yourself' Romans 12:10

We want the biggest piece of cake! We want to be picked for the team first! When we know the answer we want to be the first to say it! When we have an idea we want it to be used! We want to be told we're the best dressed, the funniest friend, the coolest, the smartest! We want to be noticed. 'It's all about me, me, me!'

God says, 'Honour others more than you do yourself.' It's said that William Gladstone and Benjamin Disraeli were both great leaders.

Gladstone, was made Prime Minister of Great Britain four different times, the only person in history to achieve that honour. Disraeli, served twice as Prime Minister. His greatest accomplishment was masterminding Britain's purchase of the Suez Canal. Both men accomplished a lot. But what really separated them was their approach to people.

A young woman, who spent time with both men, was asked for her impression of them, she said, 'When I left the dining room after sitting next to Mr. Gladstone, I thought he was the cleverest man in England. But after sitting next to Mr. Disraeli, I thought I was the cleverest woman in England.'

There's an important lesson here. Good leaders win the confidence, trust and friendship of people they lead by taking the spotlight off themselves and putting it on others. In fact, this principle will work for anybody. It's why God says, 'honour others more than you do yourself.'
