'...No man ever spoke like this Man!' John 7:46
The power of words: words can be like a mask you hide behind; words can set a spark in someone's heart; words can cut a scar into another; words can comfort; words can destroy; words send the tanks in; words sign the peace treaty; the world turns on words. It's no surprise then that John starts his Gospel off referring to Jesus as the Word of God.
Think for a second about the power of Jesus' words: Ordinary uneducated fishermen would spark a revolution that is still unfolding today because of these words; Benedictine Monks would spend all night by candlelight turning over these words in their minds; Slave-traders would down shackles at the force of these words; Cathedrals, paintings, frescos, poems, plays, books and films would shoot into existence inspired by these words; The Salvation Army would create a blueprint for the modern welfare system stirred by these words; Alcoholics put down bottles; Cancers pack their bags; Addicts cast down needles; all because of Jesus' words.
US President Thomas Jefferson described Jesus' words as 'diamonds in a dung-hill'. He meant that all other words may be cast on a pile of you-know-what when compared to the precious, sparkling gems of Jesus. If you need inspiration, or a pick-me-up, or comfort, or healing, or beauty, or encouragement today - then pick a diamond from the mind of Jesus.
What now? History shows that words change people. Take a highlighter pen to some of your favourite of Jesus' words in the Gospels, journal them or write them in a place that you'll return to, and open yourself up to being changed by them.
