WISE WORDS

''He who heeds counsel is wise'' Romans 12:16

The old wooden door of the office creaked open, 'Hark sister Sylvia, what seemeth to be thy ailment?' 'Well sister Margaret, I no longer fit into my trouser-eth and wouldst therefore like thee to pray that the Lord wouldst miraculously remove this tyre from my waistline.'

'Ahh... sister Sylvia could I asketh thee... Hast thou exerciseth and partaken of a diet of sound nutrition?' 'Sister Margaret! It is not for thee to guilt trip me regarding Big Macs and Doritos, but to pray!'

You might have come across people who just expect prayer to be the magic wand that saves the day, while they spend the rest of their time doing things that are blatantly going to get them in a jam. Or maybe that's you? Prayer is important, but so is how you focus your time and energy.

If someone comes to you with a problem, you might do well to ask some sensible questions, like: 'what do you think caused the problem...? What have you done about it? What do you feel God has said? What are you planning to do next?' If someone comes to you for advice, it can be tempting to bring all the memory verses you can think of in to play, but is it necessary?

And 'don't think you know it all' (Romans 12:16 TM). If you're not sure what to advise, be honest, and point people towards someone who's wiser than you.

What now? The Bible's full of wise advice, and books like Proverbs and Ecclesiastes are pretty underrated. Get started today with Proverbs 1:1-7.
