Who Are You Really?
'He ... laid aside His garments' John 13:4-5
In John 13 we read how after supper, Jesus took off His outer garments and filled a bowl of water to wash His disciples' feet... 'Errr, sit you down, Jesus! Washing smelly feet's not your game, fella! And anyway you've got the timing all wrong for doing all that.
You know, when you've just come in from journeying down those dusty roads, you've kicked off your sandals, freed your toes from the thongs and your feet are revealed in all their dusty dirty glory, that's when they need a good washin'!
Anyway, more to the point, in case you haven't noticed Jesus, you're Jewish! Business with feet is for the non-Jewish slaves! Sit down, you're better than all that.' That's what the disciples could have said anyway.
With Jesus' crucifixion imminent, Jesus washes their feet as a final outpouring of His love for them.
It's a real example of humility and what it means to be servant hearted. It's an example of how we should be with our mates and family - to not see ourselves above anyone or anything, and to be willing to serve one another.
It's also a reminder of how we are called to love our enemies: Jesus washed all of His disciples' feet, including Judas' who He knew would soon betray Him. By Jesus taking off His outer garments to do this also brings a sense of vulnerability. We can learn from this too! Don't cover up who you are!
