VALIANT WARRIORS (3)
'All these soldiers ... were both united and determined' 1 Chronicles 12:38
'It must be okay. After all, I'm doing it for God.' We may have good intentions, but just because we think we're doing something for God doesn't necessarily mean it's okay!
King David wanted to do something special for God. He laid down plans to bring God's Ark back to Jerusalem (nothing to do with Noah - this Ark was a special holy box containing God's original copy of the Ten Commandments.)
As the leader of the army of 'united and determined' warriors, the whole nation was behind him. But, caught up in eagerness, David paid no attention to God's instructions. He chose a convenient way to get the job done, ignoring the obedient way. The consequences were fatal for a man called Uzzah (you can read about it in 1 Chron. 13.)
David had the right motives but the wrong methods. In trying to be sincere, he got things sincerely wrong. David learned the hard way that God's will must be done in God's way. Learn from David's mistake, don't repeat it.
Remember: both your motives and your methods matter to God.
What now? Check out Phil Cooke's article later in the mag for some more advice on methods and motivations. Think about the things you say you're 'doing for God' and examine whether you're definitely doing them God's way. Ask advice from a leader or a friend who also knows God well, if you're not sure.
