TRACK RECORD FOR TRAGEDY?
''...Cast me not off in the time of old age...' ' Psalm 71:9
Psalm 71 was written when David was getting on a bit. He was looking back at how the Lord had helped him in the past through many trials and, crikey o'riley, David had plenty of those! Like the saying goes, 'You can't choose your family.'
There was enough drama and devastation with David and his kids to satisfy any daytime TV addict! 'So, what happened? Bit of family friction?' Well, not quite... 'Coming up next on the Jeremy Kyle show, we'll meet the father with a track record for tragedy. A son born dead, a son who raped his own sister, a son who killed his rapist brother, a son killed in battle against him and another son who kills his brother. What gets him out of bed?
His story... next!' That's some dose of devastation for any man to take. It's clear to see through this Psalm that what got David out of bed in the morning was the Lord. 'You keep me going when times are tough- my bedrock, God, since my childhood ... I'll never run out of praise. Many gasp in alarm when they see me, but you take me in stride' (TM).
Just like David, God takes all our family issues, worries and faults in His stride. Nothing puts Him off us and nothing's too big for Him: 'His love endures forever' (Psalm 136 NIV). What now? Dig into the Psalms and find one that fits how you're feeling. Personalise it in prayer and worship to God!
