The Secret of My Success
''For the Lord gives wisdom...'' Proverbs 2:6
Just visit any bookshop and you'll see shelves and shelves of paperbacks all promising the secret to success or the promise of a happy life. The 'Business' section promises the key to Lord Sugar's lifestyle. 'Mind, Body and Spirit' promises the road to spiritual bliss. 'Biography' promises the hush-hush secrets to triumphant living.
Jesus warned us not to be gullible: 'The market is flooded with sure-fire, easygoing formulas for successful life that can be practiced in your spare time. Don't fall for that stuff, even though crowds of people do.
The way to life - to God! - is vigorous and requires total attention' (Matthew 7:13-14 TM). Fulfilment Jesus-style is measured in service. He banged on and on about not pushing yourself to the top, but instead helping others there. 'Whoever wants to be great must become a servant' (Matthew 20:26 TM).
If you want to be a success, Jesus suggested, you're going to need more help than your own brain power and muscle: '...It's not possible for a person to succeed - I'm talking about eternal success - without heaven's help' (John 3:27 TM). This is why prayer is a must for any wannabe success story. Prayer sketches up God's drafts for your life. Without it you're basing your living on guesswork and flukes.
Finally, keep your eyes open for the 'wise ones' God has placed in your path. Success heeds the advice of others: 'Refuse good advice and watch your plans fail; take good counsel and watch them succeed' (Proverbs 15:22 TM).
