The Generous Mr Cadbury

'Her children stand and bless her...' Proverbs 31:28

Dairy Milk. Freddo. Wispa. Boost. Roses (for the older generation).... What's your favourite Cadbury product? The word Cadbury puts a smile on our face because it's the name of one of the biggest brands of the sweet brown stuff we know as chocolate.

The company was founded almost 200 years ago when the founder John Cadbury opened up a shop in Bull Street, Birmingham back in 1824. But it wasn't just the public who enjoyed the delights of the Cadbury empire. Their workers did too - because Cadbury looked after their people much better than most employers did in those days.

Inspired by their Christian faith, they built houses with gardens, a swimming pool at the factory, and even set up pension plans. John and his wife then passed on the company to their sons George and Richard. The good times continued to roll as the sons built cricket pitches and playing fields next to the chocolate factory. Sometimes, they'd knock off work early to all have a game of cricket!

Considering most people's other option was probably a grimy coalmine in pitch black for 15 hours a day, this was very radical stuff. The Cadbury family were serious about the kingdom of God coming to earth. They set in place the principle of treating their neighbour as they'd like to be treated and made sacrifices to make it happen. I'll 'Chomp' to that!
