Task-Focused
''...This job is too heavy ... to handle ... by yourself'' Exodus 18:18
There's gifted and talented, and then there's Michelangelo. The ultimate Renaissance man, this guy excelled as a painter, sculptor, and architect. Jon Walker writes: 'Imagine if God created you to be the Michelangelo of this age but you stayed so busy doing all kinds of things - good things - that you never got around to painting and sculpting.
You'd end up missing the best because you got distracted chasing the good. What a disappointment ... for God ... and all the people who would have been blessed if you'd stayed focused on your original purpose.'
Likewise, imagine if Michelangelo never got round to painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel because he was too busy with the emulsion on Mrs. Buonorotti's spare room. This isn't meant to put down generous acts (heck, God is the proud sponsor of generosity), it's a wake-up call to staying on task with whatever God has predestined you to do.
The world is jam-packed with 'needs' and 'needy people' but God doesn't expect you to be the solution to every need. Moses learned the same lesson, when he spent every waking moment dealing with complaints from long lines of people.
His father-in-law said, 'You're going to wear yourself out - and the people, too,' and advised him to appoint capable leaders to 'help ... carry the load' (vv. 18, 22). It was a win-win solution - the people got help faster, and Moses became a better leader. Release the load God never meant you to carry, and focus on what He called you to do.
