Super Size Me
'The pure in heart ... shall see God' Matthew 5:8
There's this film called, 'Super Size Me' where documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock conducts his own dietary experiment. Every meal for a whole month he eats only food from burger chain McDonald's. Surprise, surprise, by the end of his junk food binge we've learned that a regime of Big Mac and fries is not the best idea for your arteries.
Likewise, the Bible teaches us that unconfessed sin is not great for your spiritual arteries. The Psalmist writes, 'Who may stand in [your] holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart ... He will receive blessing from the Lord' (Ps. 24:3-5 NIV).
If we want 'God's go-ahead' stamped over our lives we need a healthy heart - none of this sin-junk congealing at the core of us.
Jesus said, 'Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.' The problem is not God's inability to be seen, but our inability to see Him.
No wonder David prayed, 'Create in me a pure heart' (Ps. 51:10 NIV). This word pure is from the Greek word katharos, which means 'to clean out'. The in-vogue thing for celebs is to have a colonic (a lengthy tube touches where the sun don't shine in order to flush out all last year's junk).
Well maybe you don't want to hear it, but perhaps your heart needs a special spiritual colonic. Through prayer, flush out all those nasty sin toxins and supersize your saintly arteries.
