SPARROWS AND YOU

'Martha ... you're fussing far too much and getting yourself worked up over nothing' Luke 10:41

In Matthew 10:29, Jesus says "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father." The sparrows that were common at the time Jesus said this were noisy little nuisances, and they were everywhere.

Market traders would catch a handful to sell for a penny, but they weren't much of a meal. Worse than that, they would nestle in any place they could find. King David noticed that they even settled down on God's altars (Psalm 84:3)! And yet, God grants the sparrow - an everyday, even irritating creature - His attention. His eyes are on every creature, no matter how small.

So how much more will He grant us His care? If you were to pluck a single hair from your head, God would know the exact number left behind. (Luke 12:7). As you go outside today, notice the sky, flowers, trees, birds and clouds. Think about this - God ensures that every part of His creation can be provided for, from sweeping fields of corn and flowers, to the most miniature insect (Luke 12: 24,27,28). He sees every detail.

Sometimes it's easy to get worked up about every little thing that comes up, just like Martha did when Jesus popped round for tea. Jesus helped Martha put her life in better perspective: 'You're fussing far too much and getting yourself worked up over nothing...' God provides daily, just enough, no more and no less. We can, and should, fix our eyes on that fact.

What now? When you wake up each day this week, find out how many small things you can think of to thank God for. Everything down to the breath in your lungs comes from Him, so there should be no shortage!
