Slumps (1)
'As soon as they began singing...' 2 Chronicles 20:22
In England, you get used to the weather changing. You have to, because we can get ice, fog, snow, wind, rain and sunshine... all on the same day!
We put away our winter woollies and get out the slinky vest tops as summer approaches, then it's bye-bye bikinis, hello scarves and gloves as winter arrives again.
We might talk and moan a lot about our weather but still we accept seasons and adapt. A few extra layers and we're feeling toasty again in the winter chill, and the excuse of another ice-cream helps us cool down in the summer sun.
Christians can have spiritual seasons too, highs and slumps. Spiritual highs can leave us feeling like we're touching heaven and spiritual lows can leave us feeling we're in the pits of hell.
Ecclesiastes 3: 1 tells us, 'For everything there is a season' so don't be surprised when a spiritual slump comes along. Simply adapt!
The Bible lets us in on the best way up and out from any spiritual slump. All you need to do is warm up those vocal chords and sing. I'm not talking karaoke here.
Start praising God, from the bottom of your gut. You won't always feel like it - that's why it's called 'the sacrifice of praise' (Heb. 13:15). But do it anyway. It brings a sense of God's power and presence like nothing else does. Hope rises in your soul, and it's impossible to stay down and defeated.
