SERIOUSLY NOW!
'...This is what [God] requires ... to do what is right...' Micah 6:8
'People, the LORD has told you what is good, and this is what He requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.'
The writer of these ancient words was a prophet with a dark sense of humour and a tendency to get straight to the point. If he was around today he'd be that disruptive guy everyone knows, splitting opinions even amongst his closest friends!
God handpicked this witty chatterbox to deliver a tough message, summed up as follows. 'What on earth are you doing, My people? Pack it in before I pack it in for you!' With his quick wit, Micah cut to the chase, delivering God's message with puns that hit hard. Today, he'd be as quick to christen Liverpool, 'Liverpoop', Birmingham, 'Birmingerham' or Manchester 'Mancess-ter - emphasising that when we don't live God's way, we make a big mess.
When you first read the book of Micah, it's easy to come to the conclusion that God is a mean old tyrant, out to make people's life worse, laying down ridiculous expectations with impossible tasks. But get to Chapter 7 and you discover that God is no tyrant, but a God who loves and keeps on loving, endlessly helping us by showing us the best way to live: '...Don't take yourself too seriously- take God seriously' (v.8 TM).
What now? Read Micah 7: 18-20 and find this out for yourself. In it, see how God loves you, forgives you and will endlessly help you.
