Samson and Delilah

'Samson went down...' Judges 14:1

Samson is a classic case of brawn over brains. He can rip the roar from a lion's throat or grab the growl from a grizzly's gullet but he can't tame the tingles in his trousers. Naughty boy. The story says that three times 'Samson went down' and the third time he went down to Delilah.

So the man who could reach bare-arm into a bee's nest for something sweet finds himself stung by the wrong woman. Delilah was a Philistine woman and the Philistines were enemies of God. Remember Goliath the gob, shouting the odds to David about his shabby little God - well, he was a Philistine. So what is God's chosen, Samson, doing sniffing around the enemy? Well he's clearly thinking with his trousers here, not his faith.

Can you relate to this? Times when you choose sensation over sanctification? Pleasure over purity? Indulgence over innocence? Samson chooses a path which leads him to become a blind prisoner shorn of all his strengths.

When God says 'no' to a relationship, or a habit or a lifestyle, He's not being a killjoy, He's protecting you. God sees where the road leads; you don't. 'People ruin their lives by their own stupidity - so why does God always get blamed?' (Prov. 19:3 TM).
