Prayer on the scales

'Earnest prayer ... produces wonderful results' James 5:16

Alright, so we may have enough faith to believe that if we pray for healing from a headache, God might dull the pain. Or that if we pray for sunshine at 'church in the park', God might hold off the grey clouds for an hour. But what about the big stuff? Could praying for our Prime Minister actually change the way he runs the country? Could praying for that terrorist on the news force him to lay his weapons down? Has anyone got that kind of faith?

God never patronises His children. He'll never tell you to grow up and stop believing for the impossible. Proverbs 21:1 says, 'The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord; He directs it ... wherever He pleases'(NIV). In other words, there's nobody too high and mighty for the Lord to straighten out.

Genesis 20 tells how Abraham's missus was spirited off to the palace by the king. Can you imagine Sarah's prayers as she desperately tried to pray her way out of that one? She would've prayed that God would interfere in the life of the most powerful man in the land - her captor the king. Does God answer, 'Behave, woman, I couldn't possibly mess about with a king?' No, He visits the king in a dream hinting, 'Hands off Sarah - or you're dead, mate.' Moral of the story: Your prayer carries weight with God.
