In Her Shoes

'Joseph ... saw that they were sad' Genesis 40:6

Have you seen the 2005 comedy-drama film, In Her Shoes? It's about the relationship between two sisters, Maggie (Cameron Diaz) and Rose (Toni Collette), with nothing in common, except their shoe size. Rose is the elder - a plain and serious lawyer who is protective of Maggie despite her many flaws.

Maggie is a kind of 'free spirit', unable to hold down a job and who uses alcohol and men for emotional and financial support.

In the film, Rose allows Maggie to move in with her. Their strained relationship ending, when Rose catches Maggie in bed with her own boyfriend. It is only towards the end of the film after a series of events that Maggie is finally able to see things from her sister's point of view, understand what her sister had been dealing with for years and how she felt. As a result the bond between them grows stronger than before.

Joseph knew the importance of putting yourself 'in someone else's shoes'. He was in prison, an easy place to think only about yourself. But when a butler and a baker arrived, 'Joseph ... saw that they were sad' so he helped them, and later this resulted in his own release from prison. God doesn't want us to simply feel sorry for people in need, He wants us to put ourselves 'in their shoes' and go help them. Then He is able to do even more.
