Forrest Gump surgery
'Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.' Hebrews 12:1
Quick but thick, the movie 'Forrest Gump', tells the tale of a child-like guy who runs all over the planet for no reason. Early on in the film we see Forrest as a kid, running to and fro with big metal scaffolding strapped to his legs. The big iron weights drag him down, so he can barely move until one day they fall off enabling Forrest to fly like the wind.
The writer of Hebrews describes something similar, 'Lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and...run with endurance'(Heb. 12:1 NJK). If we're going to fly like the wind for God, we need to have a bit of 'Forrest Gump' surgery.
Remember the three-legged race at school? Having your ankles tied to the school drip increased your chances of tumbling to the floor. It's the same with sin. Those little thoughts and habits tangle you up at your ankles, preventing you from flying for God. Does God forgive you? Yes. Are you still saved? Yes. Are you getting the best out of life? No.
Being a Christian is often compared to running a race. The better competitors keep in shape, train frequently and watch what they eat. If you want to stand out in the race you've got to keep your prayer life in shape. You must train yourself in the Word of God. You must watch what your heart and mind eats up.
